Lopez Sets New Hoppers Single-Season Hits Record
August 26, 2014 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
Some say records are meant to be broken and some don't even know about the records. Carlos Lopez broke the Grasshoppers single-season hits record with a single in the top of the seventh in the Hoppers 4-1 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws on August 24. Lopez wasn't aware he was close to a record until a teammate told him before the game.
"I didn't know about the record until J.T. Riddle showed me the Twitter post," Lopez said. "I wasn't too worried; luckily I had eight games left to get the two hits."
The record was previously held by Austin Barnes who collected 152 hits during the 2012 season. Barnes is currently hitting .293 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs for Double-A Jacksonville.
"It is a nice accomplishment, specially passing a guy like Austin Barnes. Who you see doing well in this organization" Lopez said.
The Hoppers have seven regular-season games left and Lopez has the opportunity to really increase the record. The 25-year-old outfielder has put up some big offensive numbers this season hitting .317/.388/.427 in 124 games this season. During the 124 games, Lopez is 153-for-482 with 26 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 73 RBIs.
"I pretty much have the same approach each game," Lopez said. "I try not to do too much at the plate; just see the ball, let it get deep and hit it hard."
Lopez credits his success this season and the record to the Grasshopper faithful at NewBridge Bank Park.
"This is the best place I've been a part of in my short lived career," Lopez said. "It means so much when you see the same fans every day and they get to know you. The booster club is always there for you and this is a family away from home that most don't get to experience. "
The Hoppers will close out the 2014 regular season against the Delmarva Shorebirds with a three-game series August 26-28. Fans can purchase tickets by calling 336-268-2255 or by ordering online at www.gsohoppers.com. Tickets may also be purchased at The Majestic Yard from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. on game days. Playoff tickets for the September 5th game are currently on sale at The Majestic Yard.
