Drive Top RiverDogs in Pitcher's Duel, 2-1
August 26, 2014 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, SC - Tuesday's series opener between the Greenville Drive (23-41, 57-76) and Charleston RiverDogs (33-31, 66-68) was a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel, with the teams combining for six hits. When all was settled, the Drive took advantage of Charleston's shaky defense in the last inning and came away with a 2-1 victory.
With the score tied at one in the ninth, Sam Travis's foul pop-up was dropped by third baseman Miguel Andujar for an error. The miscue extended the at-bat, which ended with Stefan Lopez (1-3) issuing a walk. Kevin Mager followed with a sacrifice bunt, and during Jordan Procyshen's at-bat, catcher Eduardo de Oleo was charged with a passed ball that saw Travis score all the way from second.
The rally made a winner of Drive reliever Jason Garcia (2-1), who was dominant in his four innings of relief, as he allowed no runs, one hit and three walks with five strikeouts.
Both starters, Greenville's Daniel McGrath and Charleston's Justin Kamplain, kept their teams in the game before leaving with no-decisions. McGrath allowed just one hit and one run in five innings with three walks and four strikeouts. Kamplain left after four and two-third innings, and he gave up three hits, one run and two walks with six strikeouts.
Kamplain's two-out walk to Cole Sturgeon proved crucial in the third inning, as Tzu-Wei Lin followed by tripling Sturgeon home.
The RiverDogs tied the game up against McGrath in the fifth. Claudio Custodio lined a double to left with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch, and came in on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Thomas.
Game two of the three-game series begins at 7:05 on Wednesday night in Charleston. The Drive will send RH Ty Buttrey (0-4, 7.20) to the mound as they look to extend their winning streak to five, and the RiverDogs will counter with RH Gabe Encinas (0-3, 6.94).
