POWER REPLAY: West Virginia dropped a 5-4 final to Lakewood in ten innings. The BlueClaws plated two in the first, but the Power answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and added one in the second to take a 4-2 lead. Lakewood scored runs in the fifth and eight in sac flies, and then took the lead in the top of the tenth on a walk and a double. Jason Townsend was charged with the loss.
BONUS BASEBALL: The Power are now 5-6 when playing extra innings this season after last night's loss. The club did not go to extra frames until May 23 against Lakewood, the 43rd game of the season, but has since done it ten other times over the last 60 games.
TRADED: The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded Aaron Baker, West Virginia's 2010 All-Star first baseman, to the Baltimore Orioles for first baseman Derrick Lee. Baker batted .253 for the Power last season with a team high 18 home runs and 79 run batted in. This season, he was hitting .282 with 15 home runs and 72 batted home for the Bradenton Marauders. Lee should be in uniform today for the Pirates in Philadelphia. The two-time MLB All-Star was batting .248 for Baltimore with 12 home runs.
ON THE SPOT: Eliecer Navarro became the tenth different starting pitcher used this season by the Power when he started on Friday. West Virginia has used seven players as full-fledged members of the rotation, and four in spot roles, including Navarro. Tonight's starter, Zac Fuesser, made two spot starts and before entering the rotation in late June.
WALDRON THE MARAUDER: Tyler Waldron was promoted to Bradenton after Friday's game. Waldron went 7-6 with a 4.82 earned run average for the Power this season after going 4-7 with a 3.90 ERA for State College last year. The right-hnader was drafted in the fifth round in 2010 out of Oregon State.
LONG TIME COMING: Andy Vasquez's first inning home run Friday was his first since May 14 against Kannapolis. The utility player went 210 at bats over 56 games between home runs, but did manage to hit six of his league-best ten triples.
TIME TO GET CRACKIN': West Virginia and Lakewood conclude this four game series this afternoon. The BlueClaws hold the all-time advantage in this match-up with a 49-39 record against the Power, and West Virginia trails at home with a 23-30 record against Lakewood at Appalachian Power Park. The Power and BlueClaws will meet a total of 19 times this season after playing 16 times last year, including their final series of the season, next weekend at FirstEnergy Park.
VERGE OF HISTORY: Rogelio Noris has 24 career home runs for West Virginia over a season and a half in a Power jersey. Noris has matched Stephen Chapman for the most home runs in any player's Power career. Chapman hit a single-season record 24 home runs in a Power uniform in 2007.
POWER POINTS: Rogelio Noris's eight-game hitting streak was snapped last night with an 0-4 performance... Zack Dodson was activated from the Power Disabled List on Thursday and was transferred to the State College Spikes roster... Drew Maggi carries a six game hitting streak into his next game...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 7-4 at Philadelphia... Indianapolis doubled up Gwinett 10-5... Altoona bested Portland 5-1... Bradenton blanked Brevard County 7-0... State College walked off with a 3-2 win over Lowell.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
