Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - The Savannah Sand Gnats pounded out 13 runs on 15 hits to blow out the Greensboro Grasshoppers 13-1 at NewBridge Bank Park Sunday evening. The Gnats (23-13/62-43) tied a season-high with 13 runs scored in a game. LF Alonzo Harris went 5-for-5 with two doubles, tying Gnats' individual season highs for most hits in a game and most doubles.
The Grasshoppers scored a run in the first off Savannah starter Gonzalez Germen, but the Gnats answered with 13 straight tallies, scoring in every inning from the third through the eighth. Germen went five innings, yielding just one hit and striking out seven to earn his seventh win.
Savannah grabbed the lead with a four-run third inning keyed by RF Rafael Fernandez's three-run triple. Fernandez himself scored on a wild pitch.
The Gnats added three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to turn the game into a rout. CF Darrell Ceciliani drove home two runs with his fourth inning single. In the fifth inning, 3B Aderlin Rodriguez launched a three-run home run, his 13th of the year, to put the Gnats ahead 10-1. Rodriguez also drove home a run with a single in the sixth inning.
At three hours and 18 minutes, it was the Gnats' longest nine-inning game of the year. The game was delayed by an hour and eight minutes by rain.
