POWER REPLAY: West Virginia took its third straight over Lakewood with a 6-2 win on Saturday night. Jim Murphy staked the BlueClaws to a 1-0 advantage in the fourth, but West Virginia scored a run in the fourth fifth and sixth innings to build a 3-1 edge. After another solo home run by Lakewood, the Power secured the win for Tyler Waldron with three runs in the last of the eighth. The BlueClaws committed six errors in the loss and have 11 miscues so far this series.
WHITE ACTIVATED: Cole White was activated from the Power disabled list earlier today and is slated to play this afternoon. White was added to the West Virginia roster on May 30 when Matt Curry was promoted to Altoona. White appeared in one game but was injured while running to first on a single. To clear room for White, Chase Lyles was placed on the temporary inactive list.
FLASHBACK: West Virginia will finish the first half of the 2011 regular season with a winning record, secured by last night's victory. In 2009 during the first year as a Pirates affiliate, the Power were 27-43 at the All-Star break with a team batting average of .254 and held a staff earned run average 4.66. At the break during the 2010 season, the club was 31-39 with a .235 average and a 4.28 ERA. West Virginia is currently batting .258 as a team and has a staff ERA of 3.68.
FOUR! Drew Maggi had four hits Friday night, joining Gift Ngoepe and Mel Rojas Jr. as the only players with that many hits in a single game this season. The Power shortstop is batting .329 this month after hitting .141 in April and .252 in May. Maggi seen game action every day since May 2, a streak of 44 consecutive games.
TIME TO GET CRACKIN': West Virginia and Lakewood conclude this four game series today. The BlueClaws hold the all-time advantage in this match-up with a 48-37 record against the Power. West Virginia trails at home with a 21-29 record against Lakewood at Appalachian Power Park. The Power and BlueClaws will meet a total of 19 times this season after playing 16 times last year. Saturday's West Virginia win evened the 2011 series at five wins apiece.
NINE INNINGS? West Virginia has played four extra inning games this year and one rain-shortened game, and of those five contests, Lakewood has been the opponent in four. The clubs played an a ten inning game on May 23 (6-5 LWD), extras on June 10 (scheduled for seven but went eight; 3-0 WVP), 15 innings on June 11 (4-3 LWD), and last night's rain-shortened seven inning game.
SAL ALL-STARS: Brandon Cumpton, Dan Grovatt, and Jameson Taillon were selected to represent the Power in the 2011 South Atlantic League All-Star Game in June 21. Cumpton is 6-4 this season with a 5.11 ERA, but steam rolled though May with a 6-0 record and a 1.18 earned run average. Grovatt is batting .297 over 53 games with one home runs and 21 runs batted in. Taillon, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft, is 2-1 with a 3.71 earned run average during his first professional season.
POWER POINTS: Saturday's game was the Power's fourth extra inning game of the season. West Virginia is 1-3 in extra inning games, having only won in extras on last Friday.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 5-1 at Cleveland... Indianapolis split a twinbill at Rochester, winning 7-5 and falling 12-7... Altoona lost both games of a doubleheader at Harrisburg... Bradenton did not play... State College lost 3-1 at Williamsport.
