The RiverDogs (26-44) took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against RHP Nick McBride and the Crawdads (40-28). With two on and one away, McBride misfired a pick-off attempt that sailed to center field, advancing runners to second and third. C J.R. Murphy knocked in the first run with an RBI single, before a grounder to third by 3B Rob Segedin scored the second tally.
Hickory tied it up with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second inning against RHP Zach Nuding. 2B Alejandro Selen sparked the comeback with a one-out single. One out later, RF Jhonny Gomez and 3B Jonathan Roof extended the frame with a single and walk, respectively, to load the bases. CF Teodoro Martinez unloaded the bases with a two-run single to left field, plating Selen and Gomez to tie it, 2-2.
Charleston moved right back in front in the top of the third. 2B Anderson Feliz led off with a walk against McBride, who retired the next batter but then gave up a single to Murphy that put runners at first and third. Segedin came through with an RBI sacrifice fly to center, plating Feliz from third and putting the RiverDogs back in front, 3-2.
RHP Ben Henry took over with two down in the third and got out of the inning with no further damage done. Henry then followed with a scoreless fourth, before Charleston stretched the lead in the fifth. 1B Ramon Flores reached with a one-out double and quickly came home on an RBI double by Murphy. Charleston proceeded to load the bases, but Henry battled out of the inning with only the one run coming in and just a 4-2 deficit.
The Crawdads belted their way back even on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth against RHP Danny Burawa (W, 3-2). With one away, Selen and C Kellin Deglan hit back-to-back solo home runs, erasing the Charleston lead and evening the score again, 4-4.
The RiverDogs had another answer, taking the lead yet again with three runs against RHP Jorge Marban (L, 1-1) in the top of the eighth. With one away, CF Jose Toussen got all the way to second on a two-base throwing error charged to 3B Jonathan Roof. After Feliz worked a walk, Flores drove in Toussen with an RBI single that also advanced Feliz to third. One out later, Segedin brought both runners in with a two-run double, giving the RiverDogs the 7-4 lead.
RHP Nathan Forer (S, 3) began the bottom of the eighth on the mound for Charleston and tossed two scoreless frames to close the 7-4 victory for the RiverDogs.
