Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 19, 2011) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators powered their way past the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 9-7, on Sunday evening at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, splitting the series and ending the first half with consecutive wins heading into the All-Star break. First baseman Dan Black led the way for Kannapolis, driving in four runs including a three-run triple to claim the lead in the third inning.

Greensboro struck for two runs in the first inning with a pair of two- out RBI-singles from James Wooster and Aaron Dudley. Ryan Fisher drove in another run in the second inning for the early 3-0 lead. Miguel Gonzalez singled up the middle to score Juan Silverio with two outs in the second inning to put Kannapolis on the board.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning, Black knocked a bases-clearing triple, his third of the year, to put the Intimidators ahead, 4-3. Kenny Gilbert singled to score Black for a 5-3 lead after three innings.

After the Hoppers tacked on a run in the top of the fourth, Kannapolis chased Greensboro starting pitcher Robert Morey from the game in the bottom of the inning. Drew Lee began the inning with a double, and Kyle Eveland singled him over to third. Ross Wilson's doubled cashed Lee, and walks to Brady Shoemaker and Trayce Thompson gave the Intimidators a 7-4 lead through four innings.

Morey (3-6) finished the night allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in a losing effort.

Dexter Carter (2-2) earned his second win over the Grasshoppers, throwing five innings and allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

Greensboro got another run back in the top of the sixth inning on Noah Perio's RBI-single, but Ross Wilson led off the bottom of the frame with a home run (2). Shoemaker tripled and Black brought him in on a sacrifice fly making it 9-5 Kannapolis. Wilson's long ball was the 14th home run by an Intimidator to lead off an inning this year.

The Grasshoppers tagged Terance Marin for two runs in the top of the seventh, but Chase Cooney and Orlando Santos pitched scoreless eight and ninth innings, respectively, to close the game. Santos earned his first save of the season.

The Grasshoppers outhit Kannapolis, 16-11, but managed just two extra- base hits in the game.

The Intimidators are off until Thursday for the South Atlantic League All-Star Break. Kannapolis begins the second half of the season in Charleston on June 23 with a four-game series against the RiverDogs. The Intimidators return home to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Monday, June 27, for a seven-game home stand against Hickory and Asheville.
