Charleston RiverDogs News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - Ramon Flores and Rob Segedin provided the punch in a three-run eighth inning, as the RiverDogs broke a tie to down the Hickory Crawdads, 7-4, in South Atlantic League action Sunday night in front of a crowd of 1,331 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Charleston snapped a six-game losing streak to finish the first half at 26-44, while Hickory had its seven game winning streak come to an end in falling to 40-28.
Segedin hit safely in his tenth consecutive game to tie Flores for Charleston's longest hitting streak of the year, going 2-for-4 with a season-high 4 RBI.
Hickory's Nicholas McBride made his first start of the season after five relief appearances, and ran into trouble from the game's outset. Charleston tallied two markers on the strength of two hits, a walk, and two costly errors.
Jose Toussen led off the inning with a bloop single, and moved up to second when Anderson Feliz was issued a free pass. J.R. Murphy singled home Toussen for a 1-0 RiverDogs lead two batters later, sending a RBI single through the hole on the left side of the infield. McBride's throwing error moved Feliz and Murphy up to second and third base, and Feliz came down the line for the 2-0 lead when Segedin reached safely on another throwing error.
Charleston's Zach Nuding ran into two-out trouble in the bottom of the second, as Hickory evened the score at 2-2. Teodoro Martinez deposited a single into shallow left field, plating Alejandro Selen and Jhonny Gomez.
Feliz, Murphy, and Segedin wreaked havoc once more to push the RiverDogs back in front, 3-2, in the top of the third. Feliz walked, crossed to third on a Murphy single, and crossed the plate for the second time on Segedin's RBI sacrifice fly.
McBride was lifted in favor of Ben Henry after the Segedin sacrifice fly, lasting just 2.2 innings. The 20-year old right-hander surrendered the three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks, while striking out two.
Murphy helped spur the RiverDogs to a 4-2 advantage in the fifth, scorching an RBI double to drive home Flores, who also doubled off Henry.
Nuding finished his final showing of the first half with a flurry, striking out the side to work around a leadoff triple by Martinez. The 6-4 Weatherford College product labored for five frames, yielding the two runs on five hits and two walks, while fanning four.
The Crawdads struck quickly to tie the game against RiverDogs' reliever Danny Burawa (3-2) in the bottom of the sixth, blasting back-to-back home runs. Selen clocked his sixth homer of the year to center field, and Kellin Deglan followed his second round-tripper of the campaign, taking Burawa deep over the right field fence to make the score 4-4.
Charleston forged a three-run cushion with an eighth inning rally off Hickory reliever Jorge Marban (1-1). The RiverDogs pieced together three hits and a walk to produce the harm.
Toussen beat out a bunt single, and advanced to scoring position on a throwing error. Following a Feliz walk, Flores stepped to the dish and looped a RBI single to shortstop to reclaim the lead at 5-4. Segedin piled on with a clutch two-out base knock two batters later, scalding a two-run double to center field to push the RiverDogs lead to 7-4.
Despite giving up the lead in the sixth inning, Burawa garnered the victory with 2.0 innings of two-run ball, allowing three hits and walk, while striking out one.
Nathan Forer was dominant in registering his third save of the year, preserving the 7-4 final outcome by permitting just one hit in 2.0 innings, while notching three strikeouts.
The RiverDogs enjoy a three-day respite for the All-Star break, before returning to action on Thursday, June 23, versus the Kannapolis Intimidators. Charleston is expected to send right-hander Shane Greene (2-7, 4.31 ERA) to the hill in the opener of a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox affiliate. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
