Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

FRIDAY: The Power allowed runs in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings and dropped an 8-1 final at Lakewood. Aaron Baker drove home the lone West Virginia run in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one at the time, but the BlueClaws offense was too much and the Power committed three errors to aid Lakewood's cause. Jason Erickson took the loss, while Jarred Cosart struck out nine in the win.

STARTER'S STRUGGLES: West Virginia starting pitchers hold a 7-17 record this season and have an earned run average of 4.39 over 194.2 innings pitched. Comparatively speaking, Power relievers are 12-5 with an ERA of 3.00 over 156.0 innings. West Virginia starters have pitched five or more innings a total of 24 times this season out of 41 attempts. Despite the disparity in innings pitched, the Power bullpen has walked more batters (52) than their starting counterparts (49), though the starters have retired more batters on strikes, 139 to 126, over nearly 40 more innings of work.

POWER VS CLAWS HISTORY: The Power are 27-34 since 2005 against the BlueClaws, including a 4-8 mark in 2009 during West Virginia's first year of affiliation with Pittsburgh. The Power are 11-15 at FirstEnergy Park since 2005, and are 16-19 at home. During the ‘09 season, West Virginia went 1-3 during games played in New Jersey.

POWER K-MAN: Kyle McPherson set a new single-game high with ten strikeouts over five innings on Wednesday night against Delmarva. McPherson struck out three in the first, two in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the fifth. The right-hander surpassed his own team-high of nine strikeouts in a game, set on May 7 against Kannapolis in a 2-0 West Virginia win.

STILL STROKIN': Rogelio Noris has hit a team-high six home runs this season, and four of those have come at Appalachian Power Park. Noris, who homered on Thursday, hit home runs in three straight home games from May 6 though 8 against Greensboro and Kannapolis, respectively, and in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday. Noris' only other home run was on April 25 in a 10-6 game one win at Kannapolis.

THREE STRAIGHT THEN STOPPED: Tuesday's game one win was the third consecutive victory by the Power and gave them their longest winning streak of the season. The streak was snapped three hours later when the second game of the doubleheader concluded. The Power had lost their five previous attempts to win a third consecutive game by finals of 3-2, 6-3, 5-0, 9-3, and 4-0 final scores.

POWER POINTS: West Virginia is 14-0 when scoring five or more runs in a game this year and 5-22 when scoring four or less, including Wednesday walk-off 3-2 win over Delmarva... Power pitchers have walked 104 batters this season, the second fewest surrendered in the SAL... West Virginia's win two days ago was its first on a Thursday this season. The Power are now 1-6 in games played on the fourth day of the week.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was blanked by Atlanta 7-0... Indianapolis lost to Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre 7-4... Altoona edged Erie 6-2... Bradenton slipped by Clearwater 7-5. Jeremy Farrell hit his fifth home run of the season in the victory.
