Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC - Thirteen was the unlucky number for the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday as they allowed 13 runs on 13 hits and a record 13 walks in a 13-4 loss to the Asheville Tourists.

The Tourists (16-25) got out to an early lead in the first inning off of starter Matt Hopps (0-3) who took the loss and went 3.1 innings allowing six runs on six hits and four walks. Kent Matthes hit a single off the wall in right to score two and take the 2-0 lead in the first. The Tourists added two more off Hopps in the third and fourth as he exited from the ballgame.

Down 4-0 in the fourth, Kyle Colligan hit a two-run home run to cut the lead, and the Intimidators (22-21) had a chance to cut the lead even more in a 6-2 ballgame in the sixth, but back-to-back strikeouts with the bases loaded ended the inning without a run scoring.

Off Andre Rienzo, the Tourists added four more runs and four more walks as he worked into the sixth. Rienzo was relieved by Zach Piccola who allowed another four walks, and two more runs to score. The Intimidators scored two runs in the eighth inning on a double by Jose Vargas.

The winning pitcher was Wes Musick (4-3) who worked well in five innings, only allowing the home run to Colligan who reached on three hits and a walk in the ballgame.

The Intimidators are back to one game above .500 and look to get back in the win column to split the series on Sunday with Joe Serafin (4-2) on the mound and he will be opposed by Jonathan Vargas (0-5).
