RiverDogs Come Back to Bite Sand Gnats, 7-6

CHARLESTON, SC -Ray Kruml's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th capped a five-run comeback for Charleston, as the RiverDogs defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats, 7-6, in front of 5,273 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Saturday night.

With the victory, Charleston wins their second straight contest and moves to 19-24, while Savannah drops its second game in a row and sixth in the last seven in falling to 25-18.

Trailing 6-2 into the bottom of the ninth, the RiverDogs scored four times to knot the affair at 6-6. Hector Rabago knocked a one-out solo home run off reliever Michael Powers for his first of the year, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Ray Kruml followed with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and stayed put after a walk to J.R. Murphy.

With runners at first and second and two outs, Zoilo Almonte launched a three-run opposite-field home run on the very first pitch to tie the game at 6-6.

The game remained square until the 11th, when Rabago reached on a bunt single. Emerson Landoni pinch-ran and reached second base on a passed ball, third base on a wild pitch, then scored on Kruml's game-winner.

Powers (0-3) allowed a season-high five runs in 2.1 innings in absorbing the loss.

Savannah took a 2-0 lead against Charleston's Jairo Heredia in the second, when Heredia balked Kai Gronauer home from third, and Pedro Zapata lined a RBI single with two down.

Murphy put Charleston on the board in the third with a two-out RBI single off of Sand Gnats starter Mark Cohoon for a 2-1 score. Kelvin Castro tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth with a two-out RBI bunt single.

In the top of the fifth, Savannah scored four unearned runs courtesy of three Charleston errors in assuming a 6-2 lead. Nick Santomauro grounded a RBI double inside the third-base bag for the only run-producing hit of the frame.

Both starters took no-decisions, as Heredia surrendered six runs in 5.0 innings of work with two strikeouts, while Cohoon gave up just two runs in his 6.0 innings while registering five punchouts.

Charleston's bullpen posted 6.0 consecutive scoreless innings, with Ben Watkins working 3.0 innings, Dickson Marquez lasted 2.0 frames and left the bases loaded in the 10th, while Ronny Marte (2-1) earned the win striking out a pair of batters in a flawless 11th.

Almonte notched his second four-hit game of the year, going 4-for-5 with three RBI finishing a double shy of the cycle. Rabago posted his first career three-hit effort, while Murphy and Kruml each had two hits.

The final game of this series is scheduled for a 5:05 p.m. first pitch Sunday evening. Charleston sends right-hander Jose Ramirez (2-2, 2.44 ERA) to the mound, while Savannah counters with right-hander Brandon Moore (2-2, 2.11 ERA).
