Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Delmarva Shorebirds (19-24) outlasted the Hagerstown Suns (24-19) to take a 2-1 victory in 15-innings on Saturday. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Suns.

The Suns got off to a great start as shortstop Francisco Soriano led off the game with a double down the left field line. Soriano then scored as second baseman Dan Lyons singled to left field, giving the Suns a 1-0 lead.

The slim lead held through the first seven innings of the game, as Suns starter Dan Rosenbaum excelled. Rosenbaum pitched six innings, did not allow a run and struck out six while giving up just five base hits and two walks.

Rob Wort took over for Rosenbaum in the seventh, and after getting through his first inning of work the righthander got into trouble.

Wort gave up a lead-off double to DH TJ Baxter to start the bottom of the eighth inning and then uncorked a wild pitch to allow Baxter to move to third base. Two batters later, Brian Conley flew out to medium-deep center field just deep enough to score Baxter ahead of the throw from the Suns JR Higley.

After a scoreless ninth inning, the Shorebirds threatened again in the tenth, as Dean Weaver hit Delmarva shortstop Garabez Rosa to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt sent Rosa to second base second baseman Gary Helmick singled to center field. Rosa attempted to score, but Higley's throw to the plate was just in time, keeping the score deadlocked at 1-1.

Hagerstown's next best opportunity came in the top of the 13th inning, as with one out Eury Perez singled to right field. The Suns fleet-footed right fielder then stole second base on a pitch that bounced off the glove of catcher Michael Ohlman allowing Perez to advance to third base.

However, the Suns did not capitalize on the opportunity, as Francisco Soriano and Dan Lyons both struck out against reliever Patrick Kentakevich to end the inning.

Kentekevich pitched six scoreless innings in relief for the Shorebirds before being replaced in the top of the 14th by Brent Allar.

Allar immediately got into a jamb in the top of the 14th. Third baseman Steven Souza was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and first baseman Justin Bloxom reached on an error by Rosa. After Destin Hood struck out swinging, Souza and Bloxom executed a double-steal, putting runners at second and third with only one out.

DH JP Ramirez was intentionally walked to load the bases, bringing up Higley. Higley, who had kept the score tied with an excellent throw in the 10th inning, unfortunately kept the score tied as he bounced in to a 3-2-3 double play to end the inning.

Meanwhile, Kyle Morrison was doing yeoman's work out of the bullpen for the Suns. The righthander pitched four scoreless innings after replacing Dean Weaver. Morrison struck out five and allowed just one base hit and one walk. Weaver pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two on two walks and one base hit.

After a scoreless top of the 15th, Paul Applebee (1-1) came into the game in the bottom of the first inning and with two outs, TJ Baxter singled to left field. Destin Hood's throw back to the infield went awry, however, and Baxter advanced to second base on the error.

The next batter, Helmick, then hit a deep fly ball to left over Hood, allowing Baxter to score the winning run.

Applebee took the loss, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Brent Allar (1-0) got the win for Delmarva with two scoreless innings of work.

The Suns and Shorebirds will finish their five game series at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
