Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Each team had opportunities to take the lead during the first few innings, and the Power capitalized first. Matt Curry led off the fourth with a double and scored two batters later on a two-base hit by Dan Grovatt for a 1-0 lead.
Asheville tied the score in the fifth after Russell Wilson singled, moved to second on a sacrifice, stole third, and scored when Power catcher Elias Diaz's throw to third was errant. The Tourists gained the lead in the sixth on a sac fly by Mark Tracy, and added the games final run in the seventh when Wilson reached on an error and scored on a double by Helder Velazquez.
West Virginia had runners on base in each of the last three innings, but could not push any other runs across. The Power committed two errors in the loss and have been charged with six total during their two losses and zero during their two wins.
Colton Cain made his South Atlantic League debut for West Virginia and struck out five over four and two-thirds innings. The left-hander was selected by Pittsburgh in the 8th round of the 2009 draft and did not factor in the decision.
Trent Stevenson (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs. Kraig Sitton (1-0) earned the win in relief of Asheville starter Erik Stavert, and Bruce Kern pitched the ninth for his first save. The Power were held to six hits, including two doubles by Justin Howard, while the Tourists knocked out 11 hits, including multi-hit games by Wilson, Bryce Massanari, Rafael Ortega, and Corey Dickerson.
West Virginia and Asheville play game two of this set on Tuesday evening at Appalachian Power Park. Gates will open at 6:00 pm with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm as Zach Von Rosenberg and Josh Slaats will start for the Power and Tourists, respectively.
