Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Salisbury, Md. - The Kannapolis Intimidators (3-1) plated one run in the seventh inning and one run in the eighth inning to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds by a final score of 5-3 on Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Orioles top prospect Manny Machado recorded his first three-hit game in the losing effort.
The scoring started in the second inning when the teams traded runs. In the top of the second inning, Dan Black led off with single. He advanced to third on a double by Juan Silverio. Then, Rafael Vera bounced out to short to plate Black. The Shorebirds had an immediate response in the bottom of the inning. Justin Dalles ripped a single down the third baseline to score Mike Flacco, who was at second base.
The Shorebirds took their only lead of the night in the fourth inning. Kipp Schutz, who has six hits over the last two games, hit a two out double. Mike Flacco followed with a double to plate Schutz and give the Shorebirds a 2-1 lead.
Ryan Hamme started the fifth inning with a single. Two batters later, Trayce Thompson hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to give Kannapolis a 3-2 edge.
The Shorebirds knotted the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning. Manny Machado, who went 3-for-4, started the frame with a double drilled inside the left field line. He advanced to third on a hard single to left field by Kieron Pope. Machado scored on a Kipp Schutz grounder to third.
Kannapolis plated the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Trayce Thompson was hit by a pitch with two outs. Shorebirds reliever Jarret Martin had Thompson picked off but he threw wide of Mike Flacco, allowing Thompson to advance to third. He came into score on a passed ball charged to Justin Dalles.
Juan Silverio hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to bring in Brady Shoemaker to give the Intimidators a 5-3 lead.
The Shorebirds mounted a rally in the last of the ninth. With runners at second and third and two outs, the Intimidators intentionally walked Machado. With the bases loaded, Kieron Pope grounded out to short to end the game.
J.R. Ballinger earned the win in 3.1 innings pitched. He allowed four hits and no runs. Jarret Martin took the loss in two innings pitched. He surrendered one unearned run.
