Drive Outslug Cross-State Rival RiverDogs, 12-10

April 11, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - On a night that was supposed to be about the Reading All-Stars from Greenville and Spartanburg, both offenses stole the show. The Drive (4-1) and Charleston RiverDogs (2-3) combined for 33 hits and put on an offensive clinic for the 4,390 fans at Fluor Field, as Greenville came-from-behind in the 8th inning for a 12-10 victory.

The game started with the Reading All Stars parade around the warning track and the Drive's offense followed them around the base path soon after. Felix Sanchez started the game with a single and Miles Head brought him home with a 2-run bomb in the bottom of the 1st.

The Drive scored two more in the third with some help from the RiverDogs bad defense. Both runs scored on a passed ball and throwing error by third baseman Rob Segedin. Three consecutive hits in the fifth put the Drive up 7-1 then the bullpen took over the game.

Up until the 6th inning the Drive's starter Miguel Celestino scattered 7 hits and gave up only 1 run on 75 pitches. Then the bullpen came into relieve Celestino and tried to conserve his victory but it wouldn't come easily. The duo of Garrett Rau and Tyler Lockwood (1-0) gave up 9 runs over 4 innings and allowed 12 hits in that spam. Charleston did their damage in the sixth and seventh innings scoring three runs in each of those frames.

The RiverDogs continued their hot streak at the plate, scoring the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth only to see that lead disappear during Greenville's at bat. The Drive rallied with 2 outs, to score 4 runs and take the lead for good, when Drew Headman sealed the win with a three-run homer that just cleared the Monster.

Despite the solid starting pitching, the Drive bullpen had to be rescued yet again by the offense. In a game that lasted 3 hours and 4 minutes, there was plenty of offense totaling 33 hits and 22 runs as well as 25 strikeouts combined from both pitching staffs.

The Drive and RiverDogs continue their series tomorrow night, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM from Fluor Field. Greenville southpaw Manny Rivera (1-0, 1.80 ERA) and Charleston righty Shane Greene (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will each have the daunting task of trying to slow down the top two offenses in the South Atlantic League.

Tuesday is also the first "BI-LO Tasty Tuesday" of the year, in which kids 12 and under eat free at Fluor Field. Each child will receive a voucher good for a complimentary hot dog, bag of Frito's chips or Walter's Produce apple slices, and a 12-ounce Pepsi product.
