West Virginia Defeats Connecticut 7-1

Black Bears' starter RHP Danny Beddes improved to 2-1 throwing his second consecutive quality outing in West Virginia's 7-1 victory over the Connecticut Tigers on Thursday night from Monongalia County Ballpark. The 2016 15th round draft pick shut down the Tigers tossing six innings, surrendering just one earned run on four hits while fanning four batters.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Black Bears jumped out to an early lead. After two consecutive Connecticut errors, 2B Kevin Mahala's two RBI double off the left field wall gave West Virginia a 2-0 advantage. But, the Tigers would respond in the top of the third on a solo home run from C Austin Athmann to cut their deficit to 2-1.

West Virginia would continue to find success against Connecticut starter LHP Locke St. John in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single from CF Clark Eagan increased the Black Bears' lead to 3-1. Two frames later, Eagan would hit an RBI sacrifice fly making the score 4-1. St. John took the loss and fell to 2-4, allowing two earned runs on eight hits through 5.1 innings.

Reliever RHP Matt Frawley entered in the seventh inning and hurled two scoreless innings for West Virginia. The Black Bears increased their lead to 7-1 with two more runs in the eighth on RBI singles from CChris Harvey and SS Stephen Alemais. West Virginia reliever RHP Dylan Prohoroff hurled a scoreless ninth inning.

Mahala and Harvey paced the West Virginia offense with three hits each as the Black Bears outhit the Tigers 13-5. For Connecticut DH Blaise Salter went 2-for-3.

West Virginia (16-17) and Connecticut (20-13) will face off in the second game of the series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM from Monongalia County Ballpark.
