Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - Two wild pitches leading to runs and a solid job by the Vermont bullpen allowed the Lake Monsters to come back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-3 on Thursday night at Centennial Field.

Each team got a run in the first. Leftfielder Jake Fraley doubled in centerfielder Ryan Boldt with the game's first run before Vermont responded. First-baseman Miguel Mercedes grounded into a fielder's choice to score shortstop Eli White and knot the game up at one.

The Renegades retook the lead in the third when Boldt launched his first homer of the year; a solo-shot over the right-centerfield wall to make the score 2-1. Hudson Valley then added a run in the fifth when the Boldt-Fraley duo struck again. With two out and no one on, Boldt drew a walk, stole his second base of the game, then scored on a single to center by Fraley to give the Renegades a 3-1 lead.

The Lake Monsters came back to tie the game thanks to a two-run fifth. With two outs and runners at the corners, second-baseman Nate Mondou scored designated hitter Miguel Guzman on a bloop single to second while the other runner, Eli White, moved from first to third on the play. After that, Renegades starter Brock Burke uncorked a wild pitch to score White and tie the game at three.

Vermont took the lead in the sixth. With one out Luke Persico singled to short then went to second on a throwing error by Hudson Valley shortstop Bill Pujols. After a groundout moved Persico to third, the rightfielder came in to score on another wild pitch, this time by reliever Jose Alonzo, to give Vermont its first lead of the game.

Hudson Valley had chances to come back. In the seventh, they had runners at the corners with only one out. But rightfielder Garrett Whitley was thrown out trying to steal second, and Fraley grounded out to end the inning.

In the eighth, back-to-back singles and a sac bunt put runners at second and third with one out. However, Vermont reliever Will Gilbert struck out second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni and catcher Danny De La Calle to get out of the jam.

The Renegades continue their three-game series with the Lake Monsters tomorrow with a 7:05 start. Right-hander Noel Rodriguez (1-1, 1.65 ERA) will go for the Renegades against southpaw A.J. Puk (0-0, 0.00 ERA) of the Lake Monsters. Hudson Valley returns home Sunday to begin a three-game set with the Aberdeen Ironbirds. First-pitch is set for 5:05.
