Tigers Lose to WV 7-1

MORGANTOWN- WV - The Connecticut Tigers lost to the West Virginia Black Bears, affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-1 in the first game of a three-game set.

The Tigers kicked it around defensively, committing three errors in the game. All three errors eventually led to runs for the Black Bears. In the second inning the first two batters reached on errors from Anthony Pereira and Will Savage. Kevin Mahala capitalized on the mistakes, ripping a two-run double off the left field fence.

The only run for the Tigers was courtesy of Austin Athmann, Athmann drilled a solo shot down the left field line for his first career home run in the third inning. The dinger made it a 2-1 Black Bears.

The offense threated a few times, putting runners in scoring position in the second, fourth, sixth and ninth innings but the big hit never came. Tanner Donnels squared up a couple balls to left field but they were hit right at Hunter Owen.

Blaise Salter continues his hot stretch at the plate collecting two more hits for the Tigers. The multi-hit game is Salter's eighth of the season.

Locke St. John went 5.1 innings for the Tigers tonight, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits. Bryan Garcia pitched well out of the bullpen, throwing 1.2 scoreless frames and striking out a batter.

The Tigers look to even up the series tomorrow when they send Gregory Soto to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
