Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLIGTON, VT --- The Lake Monsters scored the tying run in the fifth inning and the eventual winning run in the sixth on a pair of wild pitches, while reliever Will Gilbert nailed down his first professional save to lead Vermont to a 4-3 victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.
With Vermont clinging to a one-run lead with one out in the top of the eighth inning and both the tying/go ahead runs in scoring position, Gilbert came into the game to strikeout Miles Mastrobuoni and Danny De La Calle to end the threat. Gilbert got his third strikeout to start the ninth and then worked around a two-out error to earn the save in relief of Jordan Schwartz (1-0), who tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Lake Monsters trailed 3-1 in the fifth inning when Miguel Guzman singled with one out, moved to second on a Eli White walk and later scored on an RBI single from Nate Mondou, who was 2-for-4 on the night to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games. White advanced from first to third on the Mondou RBI single and scored the tying run on a wild pitch from Renegades starter Brock Burke.
Vermont scored the eventual winning run in the sixth as Luke Persico reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop Bill Pujols. JaVon Shleby followed with a groundout to second base that advanced Persico to third, where he scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch by reliever Jose Alonzo (1-2).
Hudson Valley (18-15) had built the 3-1 lead with single runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Jake Fraley put the Renegades on top in the first with an RBI double to score Ryan Boldt, who gave Hudson Valley a 2-1 lead in the third with a leadoff home run (just the third home run of the season for the Renegades. Boldt, who was 2-for-4 with three runs and two stolen bases, scored again in the fifth on a RBI single from Fraley (2-for-5).
Vermont got three straight singles and an RBI groundout to start the bottom of the first inning, marking the sixth straight home game that the Lake Monsters have scored at least one run in the bottom of the first (15 first-inning runs total in the six games). Vermont starter Dakota Chalmers allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision as the Lake Monsters won their second straight game to move one game under .500 at 16-17.
The two teams will play the second of a three-game series at Centennial Field on Friday night beginning at 7:05 pm with 2016 first-round pick A.J. Puk scheduled to get the start for the Lake Monsters. The first 350 kids will also receive a free BMX Youth Bike Helmet.
