
Spikes Surge to 7-4 Comeback Win over Doubledays

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Down 4-1 going into the sixth inning, the State College Spikes rallied to scored six runs over their last three at-bats to take a 7-4 victory over the Auburn Doubledays on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Spikes (22-11) now hold the best record in the New York-Penn League by two full games over Connecticut and Lowell, and lead Williamsport by three games in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.
Elier Rodriguez helped jumpstart State College with a pair of RBI doubles, drawing the Spikes within 4-2 with his two-bagger in the sixth and closing the deficit to 4-3 in the seventh. A wild pitch in the seventh then scored Ryan McCarvel, and Ricardo Bautista completed the Spikes' trio of two-out runs in the seventh with a single to make it 5-4, State College.
The Spikes then piled on with two more runs in the eighth on a Vince Jackson sacrifice fly and a Jeremy Martinez single.
Bautista plated the first State College run with his league-leading 11th double of the year in the fourth inning.
Auburn (15-18) took the early lead when Blake Perkins scored from third on a fly ball to right thanks to an obstruction call against Martinez. Oliver Ortiz then produced a single to bring in another run, but was thrown out trying to advance on the hit.
The Doubledays then scored two runs with two outs in the fifth on a Jack Sundberg triple and Daniel Johnson single.
In the sixth, Auburn threatened to add to its lead when Jake Noll singled and Ortiz walked to start the frame. However, Jordan DeLorenzo (1-0) got the Spikes out of the inning with no damage, and picked up the win with a pair of scoreless innings. DeLorenzo yielded two hits and a walk while striking out two batters.
Spencer Trayner (1) then allowed just two hits over two innings for his first professional save. Trayner also recorded one strikeout.
Auburn reliever Hayden Howard (0-2) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits and three walks over 1 2/3 innings.
The Spikes and Doubledays meet at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the middle game of their three-game series on Friday night at 6:05 p.m. Right-hander Steven Farinaro (4-0) gets the ball for State College, while Auburn is slated to send right-hander A.J. Bogucki (0-2) to the mound.
Fans can join the fight against cancer on Friday with Coaches vs. Cancer at Penn State Night, featuring a Game-Used Hat Auction presented by HRI, Inc. The special "State Puft" hats that the Spikes wore on July 15 have been signed by players and coaches, and will go up for bids in a silent auction throughout the game to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer at Penn State.
Plus, fans will be able to meet and greet Matt Paxton from TV's "Hoarders" on Friday night, presented by ServiceMaster by Holobinko. Paxton is one of the featured organizers on the show, now in its eighth season, and leads his Clutter Cleaner team as they help those suffering from compulsive hoarding disorder to overcome their condition.
The first 1,000 fans will also receive a Road to the Show Poster, presented by HRI, Inc., honoring those who have made it from the Spikes all the way to Major League Baseball.
