Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost the series opener against the State College Spikes, 7-4, on Thursday night. Doubledays second baseman Jake Noll was perfect from the plate with four hits in four at bats.
The Doubledays (15-18) took a lead over the Spikes in the top of the first inning. Blake Perkins led off with a single. With Jack Sundberg batting, Perkins stole second base. Sundberg then flew out to center field, but Perkins tagged up and advanced to third base on the play. Daniel Johnson followed with a fly out to center field. Perkins tagged from third and tried to score on the play. The throw and tag beat Perkins, but interference was called on State College catcher Jeremy Martinez for blocking the plate before he had the ball. This allowed Perkins to score, giving Auburn a 1-0 lead. Tres Barrera then walked and Noll singled to put runners on first and second base for Oliver Ortiz. Ortiz singled to right field as Barrera scored from second to put the Doubledays up 2-0.
The Spikes (22-11) scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Doubledays right-hander Carlos Acevedo. Acevedo hit both Ryan McCarvel and Jeremy Martinez with pitches to begin the inning. After an Elier Rodriguez fly out, Ricardo Bautista doubled to center field to score McCarvel and cut the Doubledays' lead to one.
Auburn responded in the fifth inning. With two outs, Perkins singled to right field. Sundberg followed with a triple that scored Perkins to put the Doubledays back up by two, 3-1. Johnson then singled to center field to score Sundberg and extend Auburn's lead to three, 4-1.
State College scored again in the sixth inning. Martinez singled to lead off the inning. Rodriguez followed with a double to left field that scored Martinez and cut Auburn's lead back to two, 4-2.
The Spikes took their first lead of the game in the seventh inning. With one out, Vince Jackson and McCarvel both walked to put runners on first and second. Martinez then flew out to center field. Jackson tagged up and moved to third base on the play. Rodriguez followed with a ground rule double that one-hopped over the wall in right-center field. Jackson scored on the play and McCarvel moved to third base to cut the Doubledays lead to one, 4-3. With Bautista batting, a wild pitch allowed McCarvel to score and Rodriguez to move to third base, tying the game at four. Bautista then singled to right field, which scored Rodriguez to put the Spikes up, 5-4.
State College extended its lead in the eighth inning. Anthony Ray led off with a single. Tommy Edman then walked to put runners on first and second base. Josh Swirchak singled on a bunt to load the bases. Jackson followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Ray and moved Edman to third base, giving the Spikes a 6-4 advantage. After a McCarvel strikeout, Martinez singled to score Edman and put State College up by three, 7-4.
The Doubledays and the Spikes continue their three-game series on Friday. The second game of the series is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
