San Diego Gulls News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The San Diego Gulls announced Thursday that goaltender Tyler Weiman has been re-assigned by the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters. The second-year netminder, who will join the Gulls in Idaho, won his AHL debut Wednesday night, stopping 26 shots in Lowell's 4-2 win against Providence.
Weiman, who was the Colorado Avalanche's fifth round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, was called up to Lowell on Monday.
The 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder from Lloydminster, Alberta has appeared in 15 games for the Gulls this season, posting a 5-8-2 record with a 3.10 goals-against average and .894 save percentage. After getting off to a 1-6-1 start, Weiman is 4-2-1 since and has stopped 117 of the last 125 shots he's faced in a San Diego uniform (.936 save percentage).
The Avalanche, San Diego's NHL affiliate, originally assigned Weiman to the Gulls in early October. He spent portions of training camp with both Colorado and Lowell.
The 21-year-old goaltender spent last season (his rookie year) with the Central Hockey League's Colorado Eagles, posting a 33-6-5 record with a 1.80 goals-against average and .938 save percentage. He led the CHL in wins, GAA, save percentage and shutouts (eight), while being named the league's Outstanding Goaltender and Rookie of the Year.
San Diego's road trip continues with a trio of games slated in Boise, Idaho. The Gulls and Steelheads will meet Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with all games scheduled for 6:10 p.m. (PST).* The Gulls' next home game is Wednesday, Jan. 4 against the Alaska Aces, which starts a four-game homestand.
