Gulls Drop Tough 2-1 Decision In Boise

December 29, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

BOISE, Idaho - Jonathon Zion broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period and goaltender Matt Yeats stopped 23 shots, leading the Idaho Steelheads to a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Gulls Thursday night at Qwest Arena.

For the second straight game, the Gulls (11-11-4) grabbed an early 1-0 lead, but that would be only time they were able to light the lamp. The Steelheads (19-7-2) tied it late in the second and then Zion put home the game-winner 2:50 into the third period.

San Diego has now lost two straight games and three of its last four, remaining three points behind Bakersfield for second place in the Pacific Division. Idaho is now only three points back of Alaska for second place in the West Division.

Alex Kim, arguably San Diego's best player the last month, gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead with a pretty short-handed tally 5:24 into the first period. After picking up a loose puck at center ice, Kim barreled into the Idaho zone and, while being pulled down from behind, flicked a shot overtop the sliding Yeats. The goal was his ninth of the season and extended his point streak to seven games. Alex Rogosheske earned his first career assist on the play.

But the Steelheads, owning the league's best power play, tied the game with the man advantage 14:38 into the second period. That's when Brad Thompson, skating through the slot, redirected Mike Gabinet's point shot behind a screened Tom Lawson. Blake Forsyth also assisted on Thompson's goal, his seventh.

Zion notched the difference maker 2:50 into the third period with teams skating at four aside. Creeping in from the point, the Idaho defenseman punched in Thompson's centering feed for his 10th goal of the season, second among all ECHL blue-liners.

Yeats made some key saves down the stretch, including a bunch coming on Gulls power plays, and upped his record to 9-3-2. Lawson, who finished with 27 saves, suffered the hard luck loss and falls to 6-3-2.
