Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Anchorage, AK - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces renewed acquaintances at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage tonight. The Aces defeated the Salmon Kings 4-0.
The Aces opened the scoring at 10:27 of the first period on Chris Minard's 20th goal of the season. With Alaska on the powerplay Defenseman Matt Shasby took a shot from the point that was stopped by Salmon Kings Goaltender David Currie. Currie could not control the rebound and the puck was picked up by Minard. Minard put it in Currie's wide open cage to give the Aces the 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
Alaska scored their second goal at the 14:24 mark of the middle frame. Forward Mike Scott broke in alone on Currie and missed the net with his breakaway shot. Scott followed the puck behind the net and chipped it out in front. Standing in front of the net was Minard who batted the biscuit out of mid-air past the goalie for his second goal of the game, to give the Aces the 2-0 lead.
Alex Leavitt netted his sixth goal of the season with just ten seconds left in the period. Scott blasted a shot that was saved by Currie, the Salmon Kings defense broke down in front of the net and they were unable to clear the rebound in front. Leavitt picked up the loose puck in front of the net and beat Currie to give the Aces the 3-0 lead at the second intermission.
At 3:46 of the third period Aces leading scorer Barrett Heisten picked up a loose rebound in front of Currie and put it past the goaltender who had no chance on the second shot. Heisten's sixteenth goal of the season to made the final 4-0 in favour of the Aces.
