Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, CA. - Jemile Weeks hit his fourth home run of the season and Brian Gordon earned his 22nd save of the season as the River Cats beat the Fresno Grizzlies, 3-2, on Fan Appreciation Night in front of a sold out crowd, Thursday night at Raley Field.
Thursday's game was the River Cats' six sellout crowd of the season, and their 78th sellout in Sacramento.
For the third game in a row, the Grizzlies got on the scoreboard first with a single to score Tony Abreu, but Sacramento's leadoff hitter, Jemile Weeks, evened the score in the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot to right field. It was his fourth home run of the season.
Sacramento took the lead, 3-1, in the second inning when Hiro Nakajima singled to score Ryan Ortiz, and Shane Peterson singled to score Jake Goebbert. The Grizzlies tacked on another run in the fifth, but it wasn't enough as the River Cats held on for the win.
Nakajima finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Weeks went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Peterson recorded an RBI as he finished 1-for-4 as well.
Sacramento's starting pitcher, Andrew Werner, struck out four and walked one, while he gave up two earned runs off four hits in six IP. Reliever Kyler Newby struck out one and walked one in his one inning of relief. Pedro Figueroa recorded one strikeout and one walk in the eighth, while Paul Smyth struck out one, as well.
Closer Brian Gordon extended his franchise record for saves in a season with his 22nd save. The Grizzlies had a chance in the ninth as they had two on with no outs, but a strikeout from Gordon and a double-play groundout to third sealed the River Cats' win, and they improved their record to 78-62 overall.
The Grizzlies' Austin Fleet tallied seven strikeouts and no walks over six innings of work, but gave up three earned runs off eight hits and was tagged with his fifth loss of the season.
The River Cats travel to Washington where they face the Tacoma Rainiers in their final four games of the regular season. Lefty Carlos Hernandez (1-2, 6.00 ERA) will be on the mound for the River Cats, as he faces right-hander Forrest Snow (3-0, 3.34 ERA). The River Cats' final regular season game is Monday, Sept. 2.
