Sky Sox Fall in Home Finale

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (66-73) fell behind early and lost to the Las Vegas 51s (80-60), 10-7, in front of 7,834 fans at Security Service Field in their last home game of the season. With the crowd of 7,834 fans, the team set their all-time record for average attendance at 5,181 and had a total attendance of 326,374 which is their fourth most all-time.

Las Vegas' offense got off to a quick start against Sky Sox' starting pitcher Sean Gallagher (L, 2-3). Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off the game with a double and was then driven home on a two-run blast by Ruben Tejada. The 51s added four more runs in the second on three RBI singles and a solo home run by Dustin Lawley.

Colorado Springs finally got on the board in the bottom of the second when Ben Paulsen hit a double and proceeded to score on a groundout by Lars Davis.

The 51s' offense continued to roll over the next two innings, scoring one in the third and three in the fourth to take a 10-1 lead. Gallagher finished the day giving up a season-high 10 runs in four innings of work.

Down 10-1 the Sky Sox began to cut away at the 51s' lead in the sixth inning. Hernan Iribarren led off the sixth with a double off of Matt Fox (W, 8-4) and then scored on a RBI triple by Kent Matthes. The triple is Matthes' first of the season and brings Colorado Springs' total to 71, which is three away from tying the all-time team record. They added one more in that inning when Ryan Wheeler hit a grounder to second base to plate Matthes.

The score would remain 10-3 until the bottom of the ninth inning when Kent Matthes smacked a RBI single and Ryan Wheeler launched a three-run home run to make it 10-7. The Sky Sox were unable to scratch across anymore runs, however, and they suffered their 33rd home loss of the year.

Tomorrow, the Sky Sox embark on their final road trip of the year when they head out to play four games against the Fresno Grizzlies. Colorado Springs will put righty Collin McHugh (2-2, 4.32) on the mound against lefty Eric Surkamp (7-1, 2.54) at 7:05 PM PT.
