Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (68-73) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the Round Rock Express (72-69), and the win keeps the Chasers locked in a first place tie with the Memphis Redbirds who won in Oklahoma City 4-0. Omaha needs to win the division outright to secure a third straight American Conference North title, as Memphis owns the tiebreaker of 2013 head-to-head record.
Paulo Orlando went 3-for-4 and drove in three pivotal runs on the night, a two-run single in the sixth inning that broke up a 3-3 tie and a RBI single in the eighth to provide an insurance run after the Express had pulled the score to 5-4. Orlando leads the team with 28 RBI in the last two months, and is tied Brian Fletcher for the most RBI in the month of August at 14, after the centerfielder had recorded just 13 RBI in the first three months of the season combined.
Right-hander Clay Mortensen, who was acquired in exchange for outfielder Quintin Berry earlier this week, made his Storm Chasers debut and collected the win by posting his fourth consecutive quality start including his last three starts with Triple-A Pawtucket (Boston). Mortensen allowed three runs over his six innings on the night, and in those four straight quality starts he has given up only four runs in 25.0 innings (1.44 ERA). Michael Mariot tossed two scoreless innings to finish the game and earn his 10th save, the most on the team.
The Chasers climbed out of an early 2-0 hole with a pair of two-out RBI hits, a double by Johnny Giavotella in the third for his team-leading 24th two-bagger on the year and a two-out RBI single by Anthony Seratelli in the fourth for his team-leading 15th hit with runners in scoring position and two outs. Pedro Ciriaco reached base three times in the game and scored on all three occasions.
The Storm Chasers need help from Oklahoma City in their series with Memphis, but will look for a win to hold up their end of the deal as they send out left-hander Justin Marks (6-13, 4.66) to face off with Round Rock right-hander Jake Brigham (5-5, 4.47). Marks has not allowed more than three runs in any of his last seven outings dating back to July 24, and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
