Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Chicago Steel games are known for fast-paced action and while the matchup with the Muskegon Lumberjacks this Friday at 6:05 pm will be played at a torrid clip, the intermissions will be quite the opposite.
The Steel will host their inaugural Turtle Races presented by Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. Five turtles will take center ice, competing for all fans in attendance. The turtles have been training for several weeks for the competition which will feature a preliminary heat during the first intermission with three turtles advancing to the final heat during the second intermission.
Hickory Knolls Discovery Center staff has constructed the "track" for the event, a circle 8 feet in diameter. The turtles will be placed in the middle of the track and will have to race to the edge of the circle and cross entirely over the white line.
"We have no idea if the race will last ten seconds or ten minutes," said Steel President Dan Lehv. "We're excited to partner with Hickory Knolls to not only to entertain, but to help educate everyone in attendance."
The competition features turtles ranging in age from "less than 10" to "40ish" with two Eastern Box Turtles (Myrtle and Winky Dink), two Three-Toed Box Turtles (Daisy and Sally Jane) and one Ornate Box Turtle (Samsonite) participating. Fans may stop by the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center table in the main lobby on Saturday night to choose a "player card" for their turtle of choice, and if their turtle wins the final heat, they will win a coupon for a free turtle sundae courtesy of Colonial Café.
Friday is a Raising Cane's Kids Day with a $10 deal available for kids 12 and under which includes a Red Zone ticket, Steel drawstring backpack and free Raising Cane's kids combo card.
Chicago comes into the weekend home-and-home set against the Lumberjacks with a season-best seven-game win streak and a record of 14-3-1-0 (29 pts), first place overall in the USHL. Muskegon has a record of 8-8-1-0 (17 pts) including a 5-3 win at Fox Valley Ice Arena on Oct. 18 in the teams' only matchup of the season.
Forward Gunnarwolfe Fontaine and defenseman Uula Ruikka were named USHL Players of the Week for their respective positions on Tuesday.
Muskegon's leading scorer, Oliver MacDonald, has already reached a career-high in goals with 10 this season, including a marker in the win against the Steel on Oct. 18. Forward Danil Guschin earned a 'B'-rating on NHL Central Scouting's most recent watch list on Nov. 11. The Russian-born skater has registered 16 points (9G, 7A) in 15 outings this season.
Following the Friday night clash at Fox Valley Ice Arena, the teams will finish the back-to-back weekend series at L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon on Saturday for a 6:05 pm CST puck drop.
