Dubuque Stymies Des Moines in 4-1 Win over Bucs

The Dubuque Fighting Saints made it five wins in a row with an impressive defensive performance against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Erik Portillo made 16 saves, while allowing one goal in his fourth straight start and Dubuque was opportunistic against Des Moines in a 4-1 win.

-The Saints beat Des Moines for a third straight time to start off the 2019-20 season and for the first time did so by more than one goal. The previous two contests both went past regulation with Dubuque securing the extra point.

-The Saints continue to excel defensively, and the offense has really woken up as well. In their last five g games, Dubuque is outscoring opponents 21-6. The Saints have now allowed 21 goals through the first 16 games of the season.

-Jimmy Glynn was a force in arguably his best game as a Saint. He had a goal and an assist in the Saints win and worked well with line mates Antonio Venuto and Mark Cheremeta.

-Speaking of Cheremeta, he seems to enjoy playing at Buccaneer Arena as he had yet another goal after two the previous time out. Cheremeta's goal was timely as it came just 23 seconds after Des Moines had cut the Dubuque lead in half.

-Dylan and Ty Jackson teamed up for another pretty goal, with Dylan scoring on a sweet pass from Ty. Ty lofted a puck over the defense to spring Dylan on a breakaway and the Saints forward slid it five hole on Christian Stoever the Des Moines goalie.

-The Buccaneers didn't allow Dubuque to get off to a strong start like the past two games but were unable to come out firing in the second and third like they did in those games as well. The Saints played a complete 60 defensively against the top offensive team in the Western Conference.

-The Saints will play two more times on their road swing, against Fargo and Sioux Falls. However, Dubuque will have a day off in between those two games with Thanksgiving coming tomorrow.

-The win propelled the Saints to 13-2-1 on the season, the second-best start to a season in their Tier-1 history. The Saints also remained unbeaten in regulation on the road. Their only road loss has come against the U-17's in overtime.

-Des Moines lost for just the second time at home in regulation. The Bucs host Waterloo Friday before going on the road against Omaha on Saturday.
