Madison Capitols News Release
Green Bay, WI - Round two of the Odyssey Brands Wisconsin Cheese Cup was taken by the Madison Capitols in commanding fashion with a 5-2 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers on Wednesday night.
Kristof Papp thought he got Madison on the board early in the first period, but after being reviewd, the goal was overturned for being in the blue paint. The Gamblers took advantage and jumped to a 1-0 lead thanks to Jesse Tucker's 12thgoal of the season, tying himself for 2nd in the USHL.
The Capitols wouldn't stay down for long, as Ryan Kirwan jumped a passing lane, stopped on a dime, and fired home the game-tying goal with pinpoint accuracy for his 5th of the year with 5:03 remaining in the opening period.
Reid Pabich took the lead for the Capitols after going coast-to-coast and sniping one past Gavin Enright at the 8:35 mark of the 2nd period before Stepan Pokorny netted his 8th of the season as power play time expired two and a half minutes later. Pokorny fired one off the far post and in, assisted by Ricky Lyle and Verners Egle.
Green Bay cuts the deficit in half with a goal from former Capitol, Ryan O'Reilly, but afterpulling their goaltender with four minutes remaining, Papp cut his way down the ice to net his 10th of the season with an empty net goal. Carson Bantle added insult to injury with a second empty net goal to seal the deal in a 5-2 victory.
Simon Latkoczy stood on his head, making 39 saves en route to the victory. The Capitols penalty kill finished the night 5-for-6 as well.
The Capitols return to action on Saturday, November 30th when the team returns home to take on the Youngstown Phantoms. It will be the annual "Fill The Nets" Canned Food Drive in support of Middleton Outreach Ministry.
