Stat Morsels
Shootout Glory: Sunday afternoon's 20-round shootout win against the Mallards was the second-longest shootout in United Hockey League history. Kevin Reiter stopped an improbable 18 of 20 shots in the breakaway session and improved his league-best shootout save percentage to .814. The longest UHL shootout went 21 rounds last season between Elmira and Danbury.
Brown Delivers: River Otters defenseman Jeff Brown has been an assist master of late with 11 assists in the last ten games. The former first-round NHL draft pick had a seven-game assist streak snapped Saturday night against Elmira, but picked right up another helper Sunday against the Mallards.
The Mack Daddy: River Otters forward Brad MacMillan has been a goal scoring machine the last few weeks. The tenacious rookie winger has three goals in his last four games and also scored the shootout game-winner Sunday against the Mallards.
Duey Domination: River Otters forward Jim Duhart has sniped nine goals in the last ten games and is a plus-1 rating during that span. He's one of only two River Otters players with a plus rating over the last ten games. He currently has 489 goals as a professional, only 11 shy of 500.
Last Week Recap
Friday, February 24: Elmira 6, Missouri 5 (Shootout)
Konstantin Kalmikov led a late rally for the Elmira Jackals as they sank the Missouri River Otters 6-5 in a shootout in front of 2,204 fans at the Family Arena.
The River Otters surged to a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal. Blake Stewart made a terrific move around a Jackals defenseman, went in on a breakaway, and fanned on the puck, but it slid between the pads of Jackals goaltender Nick Boucher. Elmira came back with consecutive goals to take the lead, with the first on a power-play slap-shot by Trevor Burgess and the second on a breakaway goal by Kevin Cooper.
The second period got off to a fast start when Kalmikov smoked a high wrister above the outstretched glove of Kevin Reiter to make it 3-1. The River Otters came roaring back with three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead. The first came on a breakaway by Paul Falco, the second on a rebound backhander by Jim Duhart, and the third on a deadly accurate one-timer by Mark Odut.
The score stayed 4-3 until the late moments in the third period when Chris Chaput buried a rebound with three minutes left in the game to tie the score. The Jackals then took a 5-4 lead less than a minute later when Kalmikov fired home the rebound of his own shot for his second goal of the game. Then in dramatic fashion, Duhart tied the game at five with one minute to play in the game with a scintillating wrist shot.
In the shootout, Kalmikov and Jason Sessa scored for the Jackals while only J.P. Beilsten could convert for the River Otters. Boucher made 27 saves in the victory while Reiter made 34 saves in defeat.
Saturday, February 25: Elmira 4, Missouri 1
Nick Boucher sparkled in net as the Elmira Jackals completed a weekend sweep of the Missouri River Otters with a 4-1 victory in front of 3,697 fans at the Family Arena.
The lone goal in the first period came on a shot from the point by Jackals defenseman Bobby Gates that beat Brenden Cuthbert high to the glove side. The Jackals got off to a fast start in the second period, getting goals from Chris Mann and Jarrett Konkle to take a 3-0 lead. The River Otters finally broke through towards the end of the second period when Brad MacMillan deflected a Mark Odut shot behind Boucher. Jason Sessa added a third-period empty netter to seal the deal for the Jackals. Boucher made 23 saves in the victory while Cuthbert made 23 saves in defeat.
Sunday, February 26: Missouri 3, Quad City 2 (Shootout)
Kevin Reiter made 45 saves in regulation and 18 saves in the shootout as the Missouri River Otters outlasted the Quad City Mallards 3-2 in an epic 20-round shootout at the MARK.
Neither team dented the twine in the first period, mainly due to the 20 shots that Kevin Reiter turned aside for the River Otters. Quad City scored on an early second-period power-play when Chad Woollard rifled his 30th goal of the season between Reiter's pads. The River Otters responded with a power-play goal of their own when Jim Duhart deflected a Tim O'Connell slap-shot behind Jason Tapp. Missouri took a 2-1 lead with two minutes remaining in the game when Brad MacMillan buried his own rebound between Tapp's legs. Then, in dramatic fashion, the Mallards tied the game with six seconds remaining when Woollard beat Reiter for his second goal of the game.
In the shootout, Patrick Nadeau scored in the first round for Quad City, Jim Duhart scored in the second round for Missouri, Tyler Butler scored in the tenth round for Missouri, Jesse Rycroft scored in the tenth round for Quad City, and MacMillan won it in the 20th round for the River Otters. Reiter made 45 saves in regulation and 18 in the shootout while Tapp made 23 saves in regulation and 17 in the shootout.
