Vipers drop three on the road last week

LAST WEEK'S GAMES: The Vipers traveled to Adirondack for two games and Richmond for one last week, and dropped all three to their Eastern Division rivals. In Glens Falls, New York, the Frostbite defeated the Vipers 7-3 on Wednesday and 4-1 on Friday. Richmond came out on top on Saturday by a final score of 4-1. Roanoke Valley is now 14-32-6 with 34 standings points at 5th place in the Eastern Division.

Wednesday, February 22th at Adirondack

Adirondack Frostbite 7, Roanoke Valley Vipers 3

The Vipers grabbed an early lead on Wednesday in Glens Falls as Matt Elich scored 6:35 into the first period. The Frostbite answered with six straight goals, however, to erase the Vipers lead and lengthen their own. Elich scored his second goal of the night at 19:59 of the second on a Vipers power play, and Mike Wiggins added a third for the Vipers 18 seconds into the third. Hugo Belanger scored one more for Adirondack in the third period to make it a 7-3 final.

Friday February 24th @ Adirondack

Adirondack 4, Roanoke Valley Vipers 1

Peter Ollari scored first for the Frostbite at the 4:44 mark of the second period, and Matt Elich answered with one for the Vipers less than a minute later at 5:31. Adirondack managed one more before the end of the period, and added two more in the third to win it by a final score of 4-1.

Saturday, February 25th vs. Richmond

Roanoke Valley Vipers 6, Danbury Trashers 5, SO

Richmond got on the board early, scoring at 2:57 of the first period, and followed with three more, gaining a 4-0 lead by 1:42 of the third period. Matt Miller erased Mike D'Alessandro's bid for a shutout, getting the Vipers on the board with a power play goal at 6:44 of the third period off assists from Nathan Riddell and Branislav Kvetan.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Vipers will head to Fort Wayne to take on the Komets on Friday, March 3rd at 8:00p.m. before making their first trip of the season to Motor City to take on the Mechanics at 7:30p.m. on Saturday, March 4th. The Vipers will attempt to start a winning streak this weekend as they take on these Central and Western Division opponents.

-Vipers goaltender Trevor Cunning was nominated for the Southern Sports Supply UHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending 2/26/06. Cunning suffered three tough losses to Adirondack (2) and Richmond, but played 180:00 minutes in net, recording 94 total saves on 109 shots taken.

-New Viper right wing Matt Elich received the team's nomination for the Sher-Wood UHL Player of the Week for the week ending 2/26/06. Elich scored three goals last week, two coming on Wednesday in Adirondack, and finished with a -3 rating.

IN THE COMMUNITY

David Beauregard and Charlie Elezi will be at the Ice Station on Tuesday, February 28th from 5:30-6:30p.m. to help coach the Valley Youth Hockey Association's "Learn to Play Ice Hockey" program as the kids play their first real game after several weeks of hard work and practice!

Vipers players will be on hand at Clearbrook Elementary to help celebrate Read Across America Week on Wednesday, March 1st at 1:00p.m. Players will read books and stress the importance of reading and literacy with the students.

The Vipers will also be present on Read Across America Day, which is Thursday, March 2nd from 9:00-10:00a.m. at Bonsack Elementary. Later that day, they will visit Grandin Court Elementary at 1:00p.m. to continue celebrating the late Dr. Seuss's birthday.

Stryker will be on hand on Saturday, March 4th for the MDA Car Show at the Roanoke Civic Center. Stop by to support a good cause, see some great cars, and say hello to Stryker!

Don't forget the Vipers' ongoing Coat and Blanket Drive sponsored by Grand Home Furnishings. All season long you can bring a new or gently used coat or blanket out to the Vipers game to be placed in one of the drop boxes, which are located throughout the arena and concourse areas.
