Motor City Mechanics News Release
2/22: MECHANICS TAKE ANOTHER GAME FROM THE WINGS BY WINNING 5-4 IN A SHOOTOUT
It was a rare morning game for the Mechanics as they had to wake up early and take on the Wings at 10:30 am. The Mechanics jumped on the Wings early scoring just 2:59 into the first period when Chris Bogas scored his 2nd goal of the season. The Wings would tie heading into the intermission but the Mechanics reeled off three unanswered goals in the second period to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Brent Gretzky, Peter Szabo and Vlad Serov were the goal scorers. The rest of the game belonged to the Wings as they would score three straight goals themselves and force a shootout. Vlad Serov and Chris Gignac scored for the Mechanics while only one Wing was able to beat goaltender Rod Branch.
Branch in the process made 40 saves to earn his 26th win of the season.
- KRIS VERNARSKY EARNED HIS 100TH CAREER POINT WITH AN ASSIST
- BRENT GRETZKY EARNED HIS 200TH UHL GOAL
- 2/24: MECHANICS FALL TO FURY 3-2
The Mechanics did what they needed to do against one of the best teams in the league, jump on them early. That they did with a goal at 8:29 of the first period as Matt Smith ripped his patent slap shot past the Fury goaltender. However, it only took the Fury 14 seconds to respond with a goal of their own and both teams headed into the lockerroom tied at 1-1. The Fury would take a 3-1 lead midway through the third period when Matt Smith again scored from the point, by ripping another slap shot. That would be how the game would end as the Mechanics had some chances late but could not get the tying goal. Rod Branch made his 22nd start in a row and made 25 saves in defeat.
- 2/25: MECHANICS AND GENERALS FIGHT TIL THE BITTER END, HOWEVER, THE MECHANICS COME AWAY WITH THE WIN 5-4 IN A SHOOTOUT!
It was an old fashioned shootout at Peranis Arena as the Mechanics and Generals traded goals four times. The Mechanics took a 1-0 lead on an Adam Edinger goal, his 37th, just 36 seconds into the game. That goal puts Edinger alone at the top of the Mechanics mountain as the greatest goal scorer in franchise history!
18 seconds later the Generals tied the game at 1-1, then at 13:35 Peter Szabo scored his first of two goals on the night giving the Mechanics a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission. The Generals scored the only goal in the second period tying the game at 2-2 heading into the third. Four goals were scored in the third period, two by each team and both teams headed into the shootout. It took five rounds before somebody would score. Luckily it was Brent Gretzky who netted the game-winning goal in the last round. Rod Branch stopped all five shots he faced in the shootout as he won his 27th game of the season.
- ADAM EDINGER SCORED HIS 37TH GOAL OF THE SEASON, BREAKING THE RECORD OF JOE BURTON WHO LAST SEASON SCORED 36 GOALS IN THE INAUGURAL SEASON
- 2/26: THE KOMETS AND KEVIN ST. PIERRE SHUTDOWN THE MECHANICS
The Fort Wayne Komets and the Mechanics were scoreless heading into the third period. It looked as though we could have a shootout or if it was playoff time, overtime. The Komets exploded for four goals in the third period and it was Colin Chaulk who started the scoring at 4:05. One minute and 21 seconds later they would score again as Andrew Luciuk beat Rod Branch on a deke move.
Two more Komets goals were scored as they won the game 4-0. Kevin St. Pierre made 46 saves for the Komets as he faced 26 of those shots from the Mechanics defenseman.
Rod Branch made his 24th straight start in net and made 32 saves in defeat.
- PETER SZABO AND BRENT GRETZKY HAD THEIR EIGHT GAME POINT STREAKS SNAPPED IN THE LOSS. THROUGH THOSE EIGHT GAMES SZABO TALLIED 15 POINTS WHILE GRETZKY TALLIED 17 POINTS
