Stockton Heat News Release
News and Notes
- Derek Grant has taken the second most shots in the AHL with 103. He broke his own previous high, which happened to the be a team high 11-shots in a game on Saturday in Stockton when he fired 13 at Texas goaltender John Muse.
- Grant also recorded his fifth multi-goal game on Sunday
- While his five-game point streak ended on Tuesday at home, Grant has points in three-straight since (3-1-4)
- Grant's busy week continued as he was selected to shoot in the Heat's first ever penalty shot on New Year's Eve in Ontario against Peter Budaj, however he didn't convert. Only 5 of 23 shots have gone in during the penalty shot this year league-wide.
- Austin Carroll is tied for second most in the AHL among rookies with 6 major penalties this season. All of Carroll's majors were fights and his 6 fights leads the Stockton Heat (two more than the next highest, fellow rookie Hunter Smith with 4 fighting majors).
- The Heat established or tied many team-high's this week including:
- Most goals scored in one game with 7 on January 2 vs. Texas (first time since Opening Night vs. Rockford)
- Despite being held to just 19 shots for the second time this season (the fewest the Heat have shot this season) the Heat beat the Ontario Reign on New Year's Eve 4-1
- During that same game, the Heat had 39 minutes of penalties (the most this season) and saw the most penalties taken against them as Ontario had 45 minutes in penalties
- On Saturday for the sixth time this season, the Heat had seven power plays for, the most this season. On Sunday, they only had two power plays for, the fewest this season
- The Heat have matched their longest win streak of the season as they find themselves on a three-game winning streak
- Jakub Nakladal had 3 assists on Saturday matching the previous team high for helpers in a single game. Kenny Agostino did this on Opening Night against Rockford
- As previously mentioned, Grant's 13 shots on Saturday were the most by a Heat player this season in a single game
- Bill Arnold's goal on Saturday against Texas came 2:08 into the game, the fastest in Heat team history

Heat Comeback Effort on Saturday
One thing the Heat had not been able to do in 2015 was come from behind after trailing heading into the dressing room after 40 minutes of play. The Heat went 0-13-0-2 in 2015 when trailing after two periods and during the first game of 2016, the Heat trailed the Texas Stars at home by two after the second period.
However Turner Elson's power-play goal just 22 seconds into the third was followed up by Bryce Van Brabant's goal a little less than three minutes later to tie the game up and send the game to overtime and eventually the shootout. The Heat would eventually win in the fifth round of the skills competition thanks to Elson and for the first time this year, the Heat came from behind after being down after two.
Not only that, but the Heat came back down three goals on two occasions during their comeback effort over Texas. With two more matchups remaining against the Stars, the Heat have ensured themselves going no worse than .500 against Texas.
Heat Multi-Point Efforts
This year, 17 players have recorded 47 multi-point games this season while just eight players have recorded 12 multi-goal efforts this season.
Derek Grant easily leads the team in multi-point games with seven, five of which came as multi-goal games which also leads the team. Right behind him however is Turner Elson and Kenny Agostino who both have five multi-point games and one multi-goal game each.
Agostino is also one of five players who has had a three-point night this season as he's joined by Garnet Hathaway, Freddie Hamilton, Jakub Nakladal and Bryce Van Brabant as players who've accomplished that feat.
The eight players that have multi-goal games are Grant, Hathaway, Elson, Agostino, Emile Poirier, Markus Granlund, Bill Arnold and Van Brabant.
Heating Up
Not only is the Stockton Heat heating up as a team (having won three-straight) but the Heat have seven players having points in more than one game and two goalies with wins in more than one game. Players include:
- Bill Arnold - 3-game point streak (2-4-6) - 3-game assist streak (4 assists)
- Derek Grant - 3-game point streak (3-1-4) - 2-game goal streak (3 goals)
- Kenny Agostino - 3-game point streak (2-1-3)
- Jakub Nakladal - 2-game point streak (0-4-4) - 2-game assist streak (4 assists)
- Turner Elson - 2-game point streak (1-2-3) - 2-game assist streak (2 assists)
- Drew Shore - 2-game point streak (1-2-3)
- Freddie Hamilton - 2-game point streak (1-1-2)
- Joni Ortio - 3-game winning streak (26-save win, 15-save win, 29-save win)
- Kevin Poulin - 2-game winning streak (31-save win, 21-save shutout win)
Derek Grant's previous streak of 5-games with a point ended on Tuesday before starting to build on a new streak while Bryce Van Brabant's team-high 3-game goal streak ended on Sunday.
Johnny Gaudreau Named First Star in NHL for Month of December
Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau led the NHL with 12 goals and ranked second with 18 points in 13 games to power the Flames (18-18-2, 38 points) to a 9-4-0 December, helping the club set a franchise record with 11 consecutive home victories. He registered at least one point in nine of his 13 appearances, highlighted by four multi-goal performances and a pair of hat tricks: Dec. 4 vs. BOS (3-1-4) and Dec. 22 vs. WPG (3-0-3).
In doing so, Gaudreau became the first Flames player to post multiple hat tricks in one calendar month since February 2003 (Jarome Iginla: 2). He also collected three game-winning goals, capping his first hat trick at 3:20 of overtime Dec. 4 vs. BOS. The 22-year-old Salem, N.J., native paces the Flames and ranks eighth in the NHL with 17-22-39 in 38 games this season. His three overtime goals are tied for second in the League, while his five game-winning goals share third place.
Teddy Bear Toss Coming Up on January 23
One of those games pitting the Heat against the Manitoba Moose this month, specifically the one on January 23, will feature one of our favorite promotions as Teddy Bear Toss returns for the 11th season in Stockton.
The Heat host the event for the first time, where you, the fans, are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to the game and once the Heat score (make sure it's a good goal too because San Diego had this problem this season), fans chuck their teddy bears and stuffed animals onto the ice which will then be collected, counted and distributed to local charities courtesy of the United Way.
This year, the Heat's ownership group has already seen one team they own, the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL, break world records for the amount of bears collected 28,815 bears and stuffed animals.
While the Heat might not be able to keep up with the Hitmen, one team should certainly help motivate Stockton fans to bring a bunch of bears to the game as the Heat's biggest rival, the Bakersfield Condors, collected 7,908 and we want to beat that number right here at Stockton Arena.
