Abbotsford Heat News Release
Abbotsford, BC - The Abbotsford Heat and Lake Erie Monsters (AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche) will finish their season series with a pair of games this weekend at the AESC. The Heat opened their season in Lake Erie earlier this month with a doubleheader at Quicken Loans Arena, splitting the games with one win and one loss.
Overall, the Heat have a record of 3-3-0-1 this season and occupy fifth place in the Western Conference. The Monsters currently hold the 11th spot with a record of 3-3-0-0.
The Heat are coming off a gruelling three games in three night weekend in which they earned one win out of three. The Heat began the trip on Friday in Oklahoma City and lost 4-3. However they bounced back a night later with a 2-1 shootout win against the Barons, thanks to a game tying goal from Paul Byron with 38 seconds left. The trip wrapped up Sunday evening in Texas and did not end well with a 9-3 loss to the Stars.
Three players have been assigned from the Calgary Flames the past few days and will be a big help to the Heat. Forward Blair Jones and defenseman Derek Smith were assigned from the Flames on Sunday, while forward Ben Street was assigned on Tuesday. Jones started the season in Abbotsford and recorded two assists in two games before his recall to Calgary. Smith has been with the Flames since the start of the season, but did not see any game action. Street played in eight games with the Flames and recorded one assist. All three are expected to be in the line-up on Friday.
The Monsters roster features three players that are from the Greater Vancouver area: Stefan Elliott (North Vancouver), David van der Gulik (Abbotsford), and Mark Olver (Burnaby). Elliott leads the Monsters blue line with five points, Olver is third in team scoring with four points, and van der Gulik has been nursing an injury and has not played this season. Lake Erie captain Bryan Lerg leads the team in scoring with four goals and two assists in six games.
The next Heat home games are Friday, October 25th and Saturday, October 26th against the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche). Friday, October 25th is Heat magnetic schedule giveaway night, with the first 2,500 fans getting a free Abbotsford Heat magnetic schedule. Saturday, October 26th will be a "Monster Mash", featuring a number of unique Halloween events and activities.
