Albany Devils News Release
UTICA, NY - Backed by a pair of first period goals and two in the third, the Albany Devils (4-1-0-1) spoiled the Utica Comets (0-4-0-0) home opener with a 4-1 win Wednesday at Utica Memorial Auditorium. Keith Kinkaid made 22 saves for his second win.
Tasked with playing in front of an energetic home crowd that went 20 years without an AHL franchise, the Devils struck at 7:47 and 8:13 into the game.
Scott Timmins forced a neutral-zone turnover and Dan Kelly helped spring Joe Whitney for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Timmins extended his scoring streak to six games - the best start by a Devil in franchise history.
Moments later and with a man-advantage, Reid Boucher found Whitney at the left face-off circle. After looking off a defender, Whitney fed Jon Merrill for a one-timer, beating Utica netminder Joe Cannata glove side.
In the third, Chris McKelvie redirected a Kelly Zajac pass at 5:14 and Whitney capped the scoring with an empty-net goal at 19:28.
At 13:12, the Comets finally solved Kinkaid. Frank Corrado's blast from the right point beat the Devils netminder through a screen.
Despite the goal, Kinkaid earned his 40th career win. He made five saves in the first, nine in the second and nine in the third.
Albany went 1-8 on the power play, giving them six man-up goals in as many games. Additionally, the penalty killed off 4-5 Utica chances.
The Devils return to Times Union Center Friday for a 7 pm contest against the Hartford Wolf Pack. As part of SEFCU College Night, admission is just $10 for college students. Additionally, Happy Hour between 6-7 pm features $2 domestic drafts.
