Saratoga Spine Player of the Week
20-year-old rookie Nick Cousins scored in back-to-back games last weekend to earn the honors as our Saratoga Spine Player of the Week. His goal on Friday at Wilkes-Barre was the first of his pro career and he followed that up with another strike in the opening minute on Saturday against Springfield. The third-round pick of the Flyers in 2011 out of Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League had 27 goals and 76 assists for 103 points in Major Juniors last season.
Last Week
Friday, October 18: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 6 - Adirondack Phantoms 3
Ben Holmstrom surpassed Kevin Marshall for most games played with the Adirondack Phantoms as he suited up for his 186th contest with the team and Nick Cousins scored his first career professional goal. But Adirondack was doubled-up on the road by undefeated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 6-3. Brian Gibbons led the Penguins with one goal and two assists and Jayson Megna tallied a pair of goals.
Along with the first ever in the pro career of burgeoning prospect Nick Cousins, the Phantoms also received goals from Rob Bordson and Bruno Gervais. Goalie Cal Heeter started for Adirondack taking the loss and was relieved by Yann Danis in the third period.
Two of the league's toughest heavyweights squared off during the second period when Adirondack's Zack FitzGerald dropped the gloves with Wilkes-Barre's Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond (who used to play for the Adirondack Frostbite of the UHL and was with the Albany Devils a couple seasons ago).
Saturday, October 19: Springfield Falcons 3 - Adirondack Phantoms 2 (Shootout)
Adirondack raced out to a 2-0 lead by early in the second period on goals by Nick Cousins and Rob Bordson, but the undefeated Falcons rallied after that including an unlucky bounce off the back of goalie Yann Danis that sparked the opposition's comeback. The Phantoms secured a valuable standings point in the shootout loss but were tantalizingly close to getting the second point on several occasions.
For Cousins and Bordson, their scores continued goal-streaks for both. Cousins scored in both games of the weekend and Bordson has now scored goals in three straight. Will Weber tied the game for Springfield midway through the third with his slapshot from the point.
The Phantoms were poised for a dramatic victory in overtime when they received a rare power play in the extra period but Adirondack was unable to convert on their two-minute four-on-three. The game went to a shootout and Springfield eventually prevailed in six rounds.
Yann Danis played commendably in taking the shootout loss decision and made some of his best saves of the young season at key points in the game. His diving stop in the second period with his stick laid out across the goal-line to deny Jonathon Marchessault on the back-door received a standing ovation from the Glens Falls crowd.
Upcoming Opponents
Norfolk Admirals (3-1-2) - Affiliation, Anaheim Ducks
The Admirals split shootout decisions with the Albany Devils by identical 2-1 scores to take three out of four points last weekend at Norfolk Scope Arena. Steve Whitney, younger brother of Albany Devil Joe Whitney, has two goals in his rookie campaign after scoring 26 goals in 38 games last year for Boston College. 20-year-old rookie goalie John Gibson led Team USA to a Gold Medal last January at the 2013 World Juniors and was named tournament MVP with a 1.36 goals against average and .955 saves percentage. Norfolk is allowing just 2.2 goals per game so far this year.
Binghamton Senators (4-2-0) - Affiliation, Ottawa Senators
Binghamton split their home-and-home series with Syracuse last weekend winning on the road 6-2 and then losing hard at home 4-1. Swedish talent Mika Zibanejad is back in the AHL and has two goals and five assists for the B-Sens. Zibanejad was the #6 overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and had 7-13-20 in 42 games with Ottawa last year while also scoring 4-7-11 in 23 games in Binghamton. Nathan Lawson (3-1-0, 2.13, .930) is the Senators' top goalie.
One of the best games of Lawson's career came against the Phantoms two seasons ago when he was in net for Hamilton. A game that was 0-0 for 64 minutes would be taken in the final minute of overtime on a Bulldogs' goal against Michael Leighton. Nathan Lawson made 34 saves on that night including an amazing 24 saves in the third period and overtime combined.
Phantoms Spotlight - Yann Danis
Yann Danis is a 32-year-old veteran goalie from Lafontaine, Quebec near Montreal. His Phantoms debut on October 5 at Hershey was his 142nd all-time AHL victory in his 277th career AHL game. Just two seasons ago, he won the Baz Bastien Memorial Award as the AHL's Outstanding Goaltender when he put up tremendous numbers with Oklahoma City; 26-14-2, 2.07, .924. Danis has 53 career NHL games as well with Edmonton, New Jersey, New York Islanders and Montreal.
Danis recorded a 32-save shutout against Atlanta in his spectacular NHL debut for Montreal on October 12, 2005. He set several records in college hockey at Brown University in Providence, RI and won ECAC Player of the Year honors for the Bears in 2004.

25 Terrific Seasons
Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of only 12 other cities who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979 who won four Calder Cups in their 20-year run at the GFCC. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-2010 and are beginning their fifth season.
