Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, Feb. 21, 2007 - The Portland LumberJax (2-6) will begin their weekend on the road against the Edmonton Rush (2-4) on Friday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. PST before meeting up with the Colorado Mammoth (8-1) on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. PST. The game against the Rush will be televised at 8 p.m. on PDX 49 while the Portland/Colorado match up will be the featured Game of the Week on Versus as tape delay at 11:30 a.m. PST Sunday morning.
"Obviously this is a huge weekend for us, but now we are at the half way point in the season and we must start to pile up wins," explained Head Coach and General Manager Derek Keenan." Right now all that really matters is Friday night. Edmonton has the same number of wins as us, and we are both fighting for a playoff spot. They are very much improved from last season, in particular on offense. It's going to be a battle and we need to figure out a way to put the complete package together. If we can do that I think we'll have some success."
Last year the Jax swept the season series against the Rush 3-0, with the scoring help of Peter Morgan. The Jax first traveled to Rexall Place in Alberta, Canada on March 31 and beat the Rush 15-12 off of five goals and two assists from P. Morgan. The LumberJax welcomed Edmonton to the Rose Garden on April 2 and went on a 10 goal scoring run through the second and third quarters to secure a 14-10 victory. Portland was again led by P. Morgan who netted four goals and three assists while Brodie Merrill contributed three goals and two assists of his own. The final meeting last season between these squads came on April 14 in Portland where the Jax achieved an 11-7 win. P. Morgan once again led all Jax scorers with two goals and three assists for five points.
The Jax have met the Mammoth twice this season but suffered losses both times. Portland traveled to Denver, Colo. on Jan. 25 and put together a five goal mid-game scoring run, but eventually fell to the Mammoth 15-11 at the Pepsi Center. During their second meeting at the Rose Garden on Feb. 15, the Jax stayed played toe-to-toe with the Mammoth but ultimately fell 10-8. LumberJax third-string goalie and Portland-native Dwight Maetche was named the Jax Player of the Game for his 36 saves off of 44 shots on goal and .818-save percentage. The all-time series record between the Jax and the Mammoth now stands at 2-2.
