PORTLAND, May 1, 2009 - The San Jose Stealth beat the Portland LumberJax 20-16 Friday night in a West Division Semifinal playoff game in front of 6,053 at the Rose Garden Arena. Forward Cory Conway (2 goals, 3 assists) scored a playoff career-high five points and defenseman Brodie Merrill (2 goals, 5 assists) scored a playoff career-high seven points.
Portland struck first as defenseman Richard Morgan (1 goal, 1 assist) scored off a pass from defenseman Pat Jones in transition with 11:59 left in the first quarter to make it 1-0. San Jose would score two quick goals before the Jax tied the game at two with 9:38 left in the quarter. Off passes from goalie Matt Disher and defenseman, forward Scott Stewart beat Stealth goalie Tyler Richards.
After another San Jose goal, Portland tied the game at three with 7:48 left as forward Ryan Powell (2 goals, 3 assists) scored. The Stealth would take a 4-3 lead before the Jax tied the game for the third time at four. Off a screen, forward Derek Malawsky (2 goals, 5 assists) snuck one past Richards with 5:16 left in the first.
San Jose would score the final two goals of the quarter to take a 6-4 lead into the second.
The Stealth's run extended to 3-0 before the Jax scored with 10:22 left in the first half to make it 7-5 in favor of San Jose. On the power play, Malawsky scored off a pretty pass from forward Peter Morgan (4 goals, 1 assist).
San Jose would tally another goal before Portland responded and cut the lead to 8-6 with 7:10 left in the second quarter. After collecting a loose ball, Merrill went the length of the floor to beat Richards.
The teams would again trade goals as San Jose scored before Portland scored to cut the lead to 9-7 with 6:10 left. Rolling off a screen, Powell made like Houston Rockets forward Ron Artest and drained the shot to cut the Stealth lead to two. However, San Jose would close the half on a 2-0 run to take an 11-7 lead into the break.
San Jose made it 12-7 before Portland scored as Merrill cut through the crease and beat Richards with 12:24 left in the third quarter to make it 12-8.
The Stealth went on another 3-0 run before Portland made it 15-9 with 4:40 left in the third quarter. Off passes from Malawsky and Powell, Conway scored.
San Jose scored again before Portland made it 16-10 as P. Morgan scored with 2:52 left in the quarter.
Two more Stealth goals made it 18-10 before Portland cut the lead to 18-11 as P. Morgan scored with 56-seconds left in the third quarter.
Forward Dan Stroup scored his 30th career playoff goal with 10:16 left to make it 18-12 before San Jose scored to make it 19-12. Then, P. Morgan scored in transition with 7:09 left to make it 19-13.
After a Stealth goal, the Jax scored the final three goals of the game. Powell scored with 4:20 left, then Conway scored with 2:54 left before forward Peter Jacobs scored on a penalty shot to make the final score 20-16.
The Stealth will play the winner of the Calgary Roughnecks and Colorado Mammoth matchup. Colorado and Calgary play on Sunday at 2 p.m. PST at the Pengrowth Saddledome. The game can be seen via the NLL Network. Go to NLL.com to access the free broadcast.
