WCL Victoria HabourCats

Wedding Proposal and a Win at HarbourCats Game

July 28, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release

Victoria, BC- The Victoria HarbourCats pounded out 18 hits, including a three-run home run from Brad Pluschkell, as they crushed the Walla Walla Sweets 13-2 in West Coast League (WCL) action Wednesday night in front of 1,676 fans at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria.

Pluschkell's bomb, well over the left field fence to the left of the scoreboard, was the key blast in a six-run third inning for the HarbourCats that helped them overcome an early 2-1 lead that Walla Walla had developed off Victoria starter Cameron Schneider.

Also contributing in that inning was Ryan Anderson with an RBI single. Anderson would finish with a pair of hits and a walk on the night to run his hitting streak to four games, while also chipping in four RBIs on the night.

The biggest action may have come during a mid-game inning break when Courtney Hannah, sister of HarboourCats pitcher Blake Hannah, accepted a marriage proposal from her boyfriend Daniel -- and she thought she was out on the field to take part in the dizzy bat race!!!

Other big nights for the HarbourCats on offence came from Ben Polshuk (3 hits, 1 walk, 2 runs and an RBI), Matt Lautz (2 hits, 2 walks, 2 runs and an RBI), AJ Alcantara (2 hits and 2 RBIs), Dakota Dean (2 hits and an RBI), Tommy Jew (2 hits, 2 runs and an RBI). Jake Stone and Austin Guibor also contributed hits on the evening.

Taking the brunt of the HarbourCats attack, that saw them score runs in every inning but the second, was Sweets all-star pitcher Easton Lucas, who lasted just three innings, giving up seven runs on six hits, walking three and striking out five. Not faring much better was Billy Dimlow who also went three innings giving up four runs on eight hits. Zach Weisz and Jack Cosca cleaned up in relief.

Schneider, who gave up the pair of Walla Walla runs in the second inning, settled in after that to keep the Sweets scoreless for the rest of his six full innings, surrendering just three hits, while walking two and striking out six.

Schneider would be releived by former Victoria Eagle Ethan Skuija who would then have little difficulty closing out the big win, holding the Sweets hitless over the final three innings, walking three and striking out five.

The 'Cats will go for the series sweep in a special matinee game on Thursday with a 1:00 pm start. Josh Mitchell is scheduled to start for the HarbourCats while the Sweets will respond with Chris Murphy.

Game Notes: HarbourCats pitching threw their WCL-leading 7th shutout of the season last night. It was also the second time they have thrown back-to-back shutouts (5-0 Monday @ Corvallis, 3-0 Tuesday vs. Walla Walla).
