Bells Pin Down Black Bears

Bellingham Bells News Release

The Bellingham Bells (24-20) used three runs in the first two innings to hold off the Cowlitz Black Bears (21-23) 3-1 Wednesday night at Story Field in Longview. Starting pitcher Nick Silva (3-1) picked up the win for the Bells, as the University of Maine product tossed five innings of one run baseball and fanned seven.

First baseman Jake Vieth's diving catch in the ninth inning with two runners on against Sam Hellinger, shut the door for the Bell. Vieth made the diving grab and then scrambled to touch the bag for out number three of the bottom half of the ninth to double off the runner.

Bellingham got on the board in the first. Shane Hanon reached on a throwing error and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. Hanon crossed the Bells first run of the day on a David Banuelos RBI single. The Bells led 1-0 before Cowlitz came to bat.

The Bells tagged on two more runs in the second. Dean Lawson was hit by a pitch to begin the two out rally. Justin Polzin took over after first for Lawson and moved to second on a Hanon single. Chase Strumpf cleared the bases and drove in both runners with an RBI double. Bellingham led 3-0 heading to the bottom half of the second.

Josh Zavisubin, Jared Horn and Sam Hellinger teamed up to nail down the Bells' ninth win of the second half. Bellingham native Zavisubin tossed two scoreless innings and punched out two, while Horn worked an uneventful eighth inning. Hellinger came on in the ninth and retired Lorin Archibald on a groundout before giving up back-to-back singles. Vieth's diving snag and subsequent double play ended the game and preserved Bellingham's 24th overall win.

Bellingham returns to the field tomorrow against the Cowlitz Black Bears. First pitch will be thrown a 6:35, with pre-game coverage starting at 6:10 with Tom Prizeman on mixlr.com/bellinghambells.

The Bells return home on Friday, July 22, 2016 against the Victoria HarbourCats. To purchase tickets visit http://bellinghambells.com/home/ or call (367) 527-1035.
