Late Miscues Foil Pippins Comeback Efforts vs. West Coast Guns

YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Valley Pippins exploded for six runs after the 4th inning, only for the West Coast Guns to answer the call offensively, falling short 8-6 in the non-league series finale on Wednesday night at Yakima County Stadium.

Jace VanDeBrake (Gonzaga) delivered the Pippins first hit of the night in the 5th inning, a 2-out double scoring Colton Kelly (Columbia Basin Community College), cutting into the West Coast Guns early lead, 2-1. Later in the inning, Freddy Smith (Cal State Northridge) tied the game, 3-3, with an RBI single, scoring on a go-ahead RBI single from Jay Schuyler (San Diego) as all three players combined for five of the team's six hits in the losing effort.

Starting pitcher Josh Rios (Cal State Fullerton) allowed one unearned run over four innings. The Pippins committed five errors, resulting in two unearned runs in the ballgame. Tanner Simpson (Lewis-Clark State College) pitched two innings of relief, striking out two. Trent Schulte (Gonzaga) allowed four runs on five hits in the 7th inning as the West Coast Guns regained the lead, 6-3.

Yakima Valley would rally for three runs in the bottom of the frame featuring an RBI single for Smith and the game-tying 2-RBI base hit from Mikey Filia (UC Irvine). The West Coast Guns would take over from there, scoring the final two runs of the night against Drake Atlee (Cal State Northridge), only one earned in the 8th inning.

Connor Zwetsch (Oregon) pitched a scoreless 9th inning as the Pippins dropped to 2-2 in non-league games this season. Following Thursday's scheduled off day, the Yakima Valley Pippins welcome the Kelowna Falcons for a 3-game series starting Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Fans can listen to the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Pippins Baseball.
