Weaver and Gowan Win Weekly Honors
January 14, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â Fresno Falcons left-winger Jason Weaver and goaltender Mark Gowan were named WCHL Player of the Week and Goaltender of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 6 â 12.
Weaver, who earned an Honorable Mention for last week's award, amassed six goals and four assists as he helped Fresno to a record of 5-0-0 last week. Four of his six goals were on the power play and one was a game-winner. Since returning from injured reserve on Jan. 3, the Falcons captain has compiled a seven-game point streak (7g-7a) and a team season-high five-game goal streak. He is also tied for the league lead with a +18 rating.
Mark Gowan earned three of the team's five victories last week. He came on in relief of fellow netminder Terry Friesen last Tuesday with the team down, 5-2, heading into the third period against the Anchorage Aces. The third-year pro held the fort while the Falcons mounted an impressive comeback to tie the game at six and force a shootout. In the tie-breaker, Gowan stopped all four Aces shooters he faced to build upon a shootout save percentage that already led the league (78.6%). He then stopped 39 shots in a 7-3 Fresno win at Anchorage the next night and completed the trifecta against the Aces on Sunday in an 8-6 Falcons victory.
Friesen also garnered league recognition as an Honorable Mention for Goaltender of the Week for his role in Falcons victories last week at Bakersfield and Long Beach. He stopped a combined 67 of 69 shots on goal in the two wins, including a team season-high 46 against the Condors last Friday, and finished the week with a record of 2-0-0 and a save percentage of 92.7%.
The Falcons and Aces play for the fourth time in six games tonight beginning at 7 p.m. at Selland Arena. It is the second of a five-game home stand for Fresno, which resumes on Friday and Saturday against the Idaho Steelheads and concludes on Sunday, Jan. 19, when the Long Beach Ice Dogs come to town.
