Underhill heads to Providence
January 14, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release
FLORENCE, SC â Pee Dee Pride Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Davis Payne today announced that goaltender Matt Underhill has been recalled by the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.
The 23-year-old Underhill is in the midst of a standout rookie season. He is 11-7-2, and is tied for fourth in the ECHL with a 2.48 goals against average. He also was one of three goaltenders named to the Southern Conference Team for the 2003 Compuware/ECHL All-Star Game to be held next Tuesday in Estero, Florida.
Last season as a senior at Cornell University, Underhill posted a 14-6-1 record to go along with a 1.80 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. He was named First-Team All-American goaltender for the NCAA at the end of the season.
Underhill becomes the fifth Pride player to head to the AHL this season. Matt Reid was recalled to Portland in November, while Ryan Knox and Mike Glumac spent time with Cleveland in December. Mike Torney remains on recall with Cleveland.
To fill the vacant roster spot, the Pride have signed Jason Brown as an emergency back-up goaltender. Brown made his professional debut earlier this season, winning a game for the Missouri River Otters of the United Hockey League. He also appeared in one game with the Columbia Inferno of the ECHL.
The Pride are back in action tonight, hosting the Columbia Inferno at 7:00 p.m. Friday night, Pee Dee wraps up their five-game home stand, hosting the Columbus Cottonmouths at 7:30. After traveling to Columbus on Saturday, the Pride are back home Sunday for a 2:30 matinee against the Charlotte Checkers. All 400-level tickets for both Friday and Sunday are just $5, a savings of $4 off of the normal price. Also, after Sunday's game, all Pride players will participate in an autograph session on the main concourse. Sunday is the Pride's last home game until February 13. Tickets for all Pride home games are available at the Florence Civic Center Box Office, or through TicketMaster at (843) 679-9333 or www.ticketmaster.com.
