Weal, Monarchs End Road Trip with 3-2 Win over Pens

WILKES-BARRE, PA - Jordan Weal broke a 2-2 tie in the second period, helping the Monarchs to a 3-2 win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and a split of their two-game weekend set against Binghamton and the Penguins.

The Monarchs (12-4-1-0) improved to 11-0-0-0 this season when leading after two periods.

Michael Mersch started the scoring when he tipped in a loose puck on the power play at 9:37 in the first period. It was his third goal of the season.

David Van der Gulik make it 2-0 just over a minute later when he broke into the Penguins zone with Zach O'Brien. His pass to O'Brien deflected off a Wilkes-Barre defender and into the net at 10:50 in the opening period.

Wilkes-Barre cut the lead to 2-1 when Jean-Sebastien Dea scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 15:48 in the first.

Conor Sheary tied the game at 2-2 when he tallied a power-play goal at 4:56 in the second.

Weal gave the Monarchs the lead again 31 seconds later when he netted his eighth goal of the season at 5:27 in the second.

Pens goalie Jeff Zatkoff made 18 saves on 21 shots, including stopping a clean breakaway chance by Van der Gulik late in the third period.

The Monarchs play next on November 28 when they host Bridgeport for a 7 p.m. start at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Nick Shore will be presented with the CCM/AHL Player of the Week Award for the period ending on November 16 prior to the game.
