Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Justin Hodgman scored two goals to help the Portland Pirates defeat the Norfolk Admirals by a 7-1 score Saturday night at Scope and sweep the two teams' weekend series.

After being dominated for large portions of last night's win, the Pirates' offense came out firing in the first period of Saturday's game. Portland's most notable scoring chance came when Jordan Martinook streaked in alone shorthanded, but Yann Danis, making his fourth straight start in goal for Norfolk, kept the puck from trickling into the net. Portland finally capitalized while inside the Norfolk zone late in the period. Phil Lane rifled a shot over Danis' shoulder with 1:15 remaining in the opening frame, and Portland took that 1-0 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes.

Just 1:45 into the second period, Portland added to its lead. Martinook shot a laser over Danis' right shoulder to put Portland up 2-0. The Pirates' leading scorer, Alex Bolduc, got credit for the assist along with Hodgman. The Admirals answered quickly as a beautiful give-and-go by Dave Steckel found the back of the net courtesy of Matthew Pistilli, who recorded his first goal as an Admiral at the 6:27 mark of the period.

The Pirates responded even quicker when Justin Hodgman found twine, putting Portland back up by two. His goal at 7:20 of the second period gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead. Hodgman lit the lamp once again as he raced into the zone on a breakaway and buried it past Danis. His second goal of the night was registered at the 14:08 mark of the second period. Thanks in large part to a 27-13 edge in shots, Portland was able to skate off the ice with a 4-1 advantage after 40 minutes.

Down by three, Igor Bobkov replaced Danis in net to start the third period for the Admirals. The switch did not result in a change as Tyler Gaudet slammed home a giveaway by Bobkov to make the score 5-1 in favor of Portland just 3:27 into the final frame. At 9:47 of the final frame, Greg Carey tapped in another chance behind Bobkov as the Pirates lead climbed to 6-1.

Eric Selleck made it five unanswered goals for the Pirates, scoring on a clean-cut breakaway 13:20 into the third period. The Pirates skated off Scope ice after sweeping the weekend series with the Admirals by a 7-1 final on Saturday night.

McKenna turned aside 28 of 29 shots for Portland. Danis saved 23 of 27 shots, while Bobkov stopped 3 of 6 in relief.

The Pirates went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Admirals went 1-for-3.

The Admirals are back home on Wednesday evening when they host the Charlotte Checkers. Puck drops at 7:15 pm. Tickets are still available at the Scope Box Office.
