Cleveland Monsters News Release
Grand Rapids took a 3-1 first period lead over the Lake Erie Monsters for the second straight night, but unlike Friday night, the Monsters were unable to overcome the deficit on Saturday as the Griffins handed the Monsters a 5-2 defeat. Paul Carey and Max Noreau scored for the Monsters. The Monsters are back in action Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena when they welcome in the Hamilton Bulldogs for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff.
Paul Carey opened the scoring for the Monsters with a shorthanded goal at 6:19 of the first period by charging the net and redirecting a Stefan Elliott shot from the right boards. Michael Schumacher also assisted on the goal, which was the fourth of the season for Carey. Grand Rapids scored three straight goals before the period ended to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission. Just 13 seconds after the Monsters scored to make it 1-0, Stephen Weiss tied the game on the power play for Grand Rapids; his second goal in as many games. Anthony Mantha scored following a centering pass from Andy Miele at 11:18 of the first period to give the Griffins a 2-1 edge, and Louis-Marc Aubry tipped a Nick Jensen pass over the shoulder of Sami Aittokallio to give the Griffins a 3-1 lead at 16:14 of the first period.
Each team struck in the second period, and it was Grand Rapids scoring the period's first goal to extend their lead to 4-1. Mark Zengerle tipped a Matthias Backman shot from the left point at the 11:37 mark past Monsters goalie Sami Aittokallio on the power play, but the Monsters countered quickly. Just 17 seconds later, the Monsters scored a power play goal of their own when Joey Hishon cleanly won a faceoff to Max Noreau at the left point, and Noreau wristed a shot past Grand Rapids goalie Tom McCollum.
Mitch Callahan scored an empty-net goal with 3:00 remaining in the to secure a 5-2 victory for Grand Rapids.
Sami Aittokallio stopped 25 of 29 shots in net for the Monsters; his record is now 2-1-0. Tom McCollum stopped 30 of 32 Monsters shots in the Grand Rapids win. McCollum is now 4-5-1 on the season.
