Waterloo Bucks News Release
THUNDER BAY, Ontario - The Waterloo Bucks (17-16) dropped their third consecutive game on the road after being shutout, 3-0, by the Thunder Bay Border Cats (14-17) Saturday evening at Port Arthur Stadium. In a game marked by hard hit baseballs and tough defense, Waterloo's offense compiled just five hits off Julian Loret de Mola (Nova Southeastern) who lasted for the complete game in the start for the Border Cats.
Tyler Day (2-1) (Stephen F. Austin) dropped his first start of the year for the Bucks, surrendering seven scattered hits on the night with three runs, three strikeouts and zero walks. Tyler Selesky (Florida Gulf Coast) paced the Bucks' lineup with two singles in the contest while Joe Martinson (Minnesota) was strong out of the bullpen, sending down all five hitters he faced in his relief outing.
Jared James (Long Beach St.) sent the Border Cats ahead, 1-0, with a leadoff homerun to the right field corner in the bottom of the first.
Thunder Bay made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the fourth with three timely at-bats. Joe Gellenbeck (Xavier) singled to open the frame and scored on Grant McKown's (Florida Tech) double down the left-field line. Then, Matt Batten (Quinnipiac) drove in McKown with a two-out single to make it a three-run advantage.
Tyler Day (2-1) ended his start after six complete innings on the mound. The right-hander kept his pitches around the zone all night, scattering three runs on seven hits while striking out three and not walking a single batter.
Derringer Huff (South Dakota St.) allowed one hit and recorded one out in the bottom of the seventh frame before leaving with physical discomfort.
With one out and a man on first base, Martinson toed the hill and finished the inning on two pitches. Martinson sent down the Border Cats in order in the eighth, finishing his night with no hits allowed and one strikeout.
The Bucks' bats collected back-to-back singles from Zach Soria (Florida International) and Selesky with two outs in the top of the ninth before running out of a rally, trailing 3-0.
Waterloo closes the two-game series with the Border Cats Sunday at 5:05 p.m. (ET). The Bucks finish the seven-game stand with a traveling-doubleheader with the Rochester Honkers on June 30.
