Carolina Mudcats News Release

ZEBULON, NC - Jacob Schrader and Joe Odom both hit two-run home runs in the fourth and Andrew Waszak pitched six and 1/3 scoreless innings as the Mudcats picked up their second straight shutout victory with a 7-0 blanking of the visiting Blue Rocks at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.

The Mudcats (21-24) snapped a 12 game losing streak on Friday night with a 2-0 win against Myrtle Beach and have now won two straight games. Saturday's shutout against Wilmington (27-21) was Carolina's third shutout victory of the season.

Waszak (2-3, 2.82 ERA) pitched into the seventh for the first time this season and held the Blue Rocks to five hits over six and 1/3 inning pitched. He struck out three, did not record a walk and did not give up an extra base hit in the victory. Waszak's victory on Saturday in game one of the series was his first as a starter this season.

The Mudcats scored first in the game after Carlos Franco singled and scored on a double by Odom with two outs in the second inning. Wilmington starter Jakob Junis allowed two hits and one run in the second. He also gave up a run and one hit in the third before allowing two home runs in the fourth. Junis (2-4, 4.20) left after the fifth with seven runs allowed on eight hits.

Carolina's four run fourth started with a leadoff single to right by Sal Giardina and continued with Schrader's two-run home run to left. The home run was Schrader's team best fifth of the season and put the Mudcats up 4-0. Junis followed the home run by walking Franco on four straight pitches before giving up a home run to Odom in the same inning.

Odom's home run in the fourth was his second of the season and his second against the Blue Rocks as well. It also marked the second time that the Mudcats had homered twice in one inning. They last hit two in one inning on April 10 against Salem in Zebulon (Carlos Franco and Sean Godfrey).

Carolina led 6-0 until the fifth when Schrader brought in one more run with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 7-0. Schrader was 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI in the win. Odom also drove in three runs and was 2-for-4 for the Mudcats.

Waszak took the 7-0 lead into the seventh and allowed two men to reach before collecting one out in the inning. He left with two men on and Mauricio Cabrera finished the inning without allowing a run. He finished his scoreless appearance without allowing a hit and with one strikeout over one and 1/3 innings. Britt Robertshaw pitched the ninth and finished the game with a strikeout. He walked one and struck out two in the final frame.
