Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, Md.-Keys pitching allowed a season-high 17 hits, while Luis Gonzalez surrendered a career-high 10 runs as the Lynchburg Hillcats earned a 12-8 victory on Saturday night at Nymeo Field. Despite a strong offensive showing, Lynchburg struggled to put the game away. In the contest, the visitors walked eight batters, committed four errors and utilized five different pitchers, but earned their first win in Frederick this season.

The Hillcats batted around twice, scoring six times in the first and fourth innings. Clint Frazier jump-started the Lynchburg offense, hitting his first of two home runs off Gonzalez (3-4) to deep left-center. After an RBI double by Nellie Rodriguez scored Bradley Zimmer who reached on a single, Paul Hendrix added a longball of his own to make it 4-0. A single by Mike Papi, an RBI two-bagger by Joe Sever and an RBI base knock by Ivan Castillo completed the scoring.

Frederick managed to get two runs back in the home-first off Michael Peoples, after two errors and a walk put the first three Keys hitters aboard. Jeff Kemp brought home Josh Hart via a sacrifice fly and Brenden Webb singled in Tucker Nathans.

Gonzalez would settle down in the second and third, but Lynchburg sent 10 more to bat in the fourth. Frazier added his second home run of the game to left, a three-run shot to make it 9-2, while Gonzalez would exit one batter later, after throwing a 2-0 pitch behind Zimmer. Forced to come in mid-batter, Dariel Delgado surrendered run scoring hits to Eric Haase (single) and Mike Papi (double) to make it a 10-run deficit.

Over three-plus innings, Gonzalez allowed 10 runs (all earned) on 12 hits to go along with three home runs. The 12 hits and 10 runs were both career-highs. He struck out five and walked one.

Frederick's most productive inning came in the fifth, when the Keys scored five times thanks to four Lynchburg walks. Nathans started the scoring with a solo homer off Peoples. From there, a double by Trey Mancini a walk to Webb and a single by Adrian Marin loaded the bases, before Peoples was removed for Clayton Cook. The Hillcats righty would allow all three runners to score as Anthony Caronia singled in Mancini, Johnny Ruettiger brought in Webb on a sac-fly and walks to Josh Hart and Nathans forced in runs. However, Robbie Aviles would retire Mancini on a groundout to third to keep the bases loaded.

In the eighth, the Keys managed one more unearned run off Delvy Francisco after an error by Nellie Rodriguez, a double by Nathans and an RBI bounce out by Kemp, but the orange and black would get no closer than four down.

Aviles (3-1) earned the win for Lynchburg tossing 2.1 scoreless innings of one-hit baseball. At the plate, Frazier became the third opposing player to hit two home runs off Frederick pitching in 2015. He finished 2-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while five Hillcats players finished with multi-hit games and seven added an RBI.

On the Keys side, Caronia went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored and Nathans went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
